Hi,

We’ve just ghosted a pc with some SW on suse 9.3 to some other hardware due to a failure.

Now when it boots I just get a black screen with GRUB showing…

Any ideas ?

Boot the 9.3 DVD and choose rescue.

Download http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ rescatux and repair the grub (it
is documented in their wiki).

Btw do you really want to keep an old 9.3?

PC: oS 11.4 (dual boot 12.1) 64 bit | Intel Core i7-2600@3.40GHz | KDE
4.6.0 | GeForce GT 420 | 16GB Ram
Eee PC 1201n: oS 11.4 64 bit | Intel Atom 330@1.60GHz | KDE 4.7.3 |
nVidia ION | 3GB Ram

Thanks Both.

Can’t seem to find a 9.3 on the downlaods section.

Downloading rescatux now and will give that a try.

Not sure if the SW loaded will work on anything newer so will try and repair this one first - if that works i’ll create a ghost image - is it possible to upgrade the os in place ?

of course not, 9.3 was not even openSUSE it was SUSE and reached its end
of life years ago. You can still find it somewhere on mirrors which keep
for historical reasons old SUSE versions.

SUSE Linux 9.3 reached its end of life on April 30th 2007 (cite:
http://en.opensuse.org/Lifetime)

sure hope it is running alone and not on any network where it might
possibly be accessed by the internet or disgruntled employees!!

suggest you soon replace it with a system having robust security update
support…

to your upgrade in place question: not sure, but i think SUSE Linux
Enterprise Server version 10 can be laid on top, “in place” as you
say…have a look around here: www.suse.com

by the way @christopherbell: Carlos gave a perfectly correct and to
the point answer to any Linux administrator who has run a 9.3 machine
for five years, or more!! but, if you are not that administrator, then
it is up to YOU to say so up front, and then you get beginner or
intermediate instructions, as you wish…

It is obsolete, so it is not there. You have to look in the discontinued
section of some mirrors.

But I assumed that you had the DVD that was used for installation of that
machine. Any administrator would.

Online update? No, it was developed later.
Update via DVD? Yes… possibly, in careful steps. Certainly not in one jump.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for the helpfull replys

No its not on a network - its boxed away in a wall running a small attraction.

As we didnt set it up we dont have any DVD’s for the unit so I might have to look see if I can find a download or see if any instructions can be located to upgrade it as it looks like its well past support as an OS.

The supergrub disk didnt work but i’m ;looking on their site for answers to that.

Thanks again.

If I understand correctly, what you care about is the ability to run a
particular application program (or programs). In an ideal world, I think
your best path would be:

-1- get a new hardware box
-2- install a current operating system (opensuse 11.4 or 12.1 would be
obvious possibilities)
-3- see if you can load and run your application
-4- repeat steps 2 & 3, tweaking versions & settings until it works

There are many potential snags. For example, if your application is a
compiled program and you don’t have the source, that would be a big
problem, because of system and compiler changes over time.

Cheers, Dave

personally, since it is “sitting in a wall” with no network running
something that needs to be run–and has been that since 2007 (or before)
i’d first try to ‘upgrade’ from 9.3 to SLES 10 (which i guess would
work–if not, then just backup, format and fresh install SLES 11) then
install all the updates during the FREE trial period and then let it run
another five years or so, unbothered and untouched!

(another way of saying that is: i have a high level of confidence that
SLES will prove to be more reliable and stable than either 11.4 or 12.1,
untouched in a wall)

of course, ymmv!

Then I would not touch it. If it works, and there is no danger (of what!?)
then leave it alone. Just make sure to keep the image and the rescue disk.

Shame on the installer.
Maybe he expected to be called again for repairs. >:-)

Look:

ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/

But the older they have is 10.2. I’m sure some other mirror will have 9.3.
If you don’t get an answer here, ask in the opensuse mail list. There are
people there using it.

Ah! Have a look here:

http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mirrors#EOL_mirrors

At least one of them has 9.3, I checked. The CDs at least.

Dear Carlos,

hardware failure forced someone to touch it… :stuck_out_tongue:

Absolutely, but my Xtall ball tells me that setting it running on new but
common hardware will be easier than upgrading and setting it up again. I’m
guessing the machine has a special setup and software for which they don’t
have the “key”.
