SuSE 13.1 sound intermittently fails on boot up

I have two openSuSE 13.1 stock installations, one of which also has an Oracle VirtualBox installation (for Windows XP). Both are ASUS workstation motherboards.

Intermittently, on boot up of the machine with VirtualBox, there is no sound from various audio applications (Radio Tray, Amarok, etc.). KDE desktop notifications do work, so that portion of the installation is functioning correctly. Some days I get sound and on others I need to restart, sometimes more than once – log off and on is not sufficient. Perhaps there is a conflict somewhere. Sound on the other machine (without VirtualBox) works every time.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting or fixing this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe install pavucontrol. It can help. It could be an issue of the volume control on each app. pavucontrol allows adjustment and in any case may help in troubleshooting

Try using yast-> hardware->sound and edit some parameter to its default to
restart sound. It helps on my 11.4/KDE3 machine with flakey sound. I
would directly restart sound if i happen to find the command. That is
what appears to do the job for me.
