SUSE 12.3 Install Hangs, Fails Over To Hard Drive

Burned SUSE 12.3 ISO on HP Lightscribe DVD-R (with no graphic). Confirmed MD5 checksum. Attempted install failed on AMD 64 bit machine; BIOS had self tested then the screen displayed input cursor in upper left corner for approx a minute before timing out and failing over to the hard drive to continue booting an image from there. Same behaviour observed on many attempts.

Problem was solved(?) by finally burning ISO on DVD-R from TDK at 8x speed. Was successful in installing 12.3 from this disk. This media is supposed to be good for 16x burn speed.

I post this so that others can hopefully avoid my pain. I actually burned the ISO on 3 HP disks along the way. The first time was at 16x speed from an image which had not been verified (because I almost never bother). The 2nd using a freshly downloaded copy of the image and checksum verified but still burned at 16x. The 3rd attempt was also with the 2nd image at 8x speed. All 3 failed exactly the same way. Also tried it on a 32 bit machine which failed similarly but message on screen said it was looking for a boot loader before timing out if I recall correctly.

It’s a Samsung DVD writer for the record, but has never given me grief before. However I only ever used TDK since SUSE 10.1 so… who knows…
Unlikely this is a SUSE problem but just in case I’m posting here.

It is always recommended to burn iso at the slowest speed you can.
