SUSE 12.3 - Give root Password for Login And Grub

Hello,

I’m new to OpenSuse, and still using 12.3 , sometimes 42 for dual boot with windows ( for office purpose )

recently i got this message : “Give root password for login”
And after that , i only type the password and success for login.

What i usually do is type “fsck” , sometime it can, sometime can’t.
usually, when it didn’t work, because there is this message : "fsck failed, sda 2/3 is mounted "

i unmount that first, adn type fsck again.

So, my question is :

  1. What is really happening in this step ? Is *** because one of my partition ( one of sda ) is corrupted ? or else ?
  2. What is happening of my pc ? ( sometime problem show only Grub ) , so i rstore the partition using clonezilla .
  3. is the problem ( give root password for login ) state that i can access linux ? is my condition already access opensuse but can’t enter because the partition is broken / corrupted ?

Hello and welcome to these forums.

A lot of things are unclear to me.

You say you are new to openSUSE and nevertheless you say you are using version 12.3, which is old and already out of support for a long time. Did you inherit the system from somebody else (who forgot to stay up-to-date)?

It is rather vague what you are describing here. E.g. you say:

recently i got this message : “Give root password for login”

When did you get that, what were you doing. Was it shown on a terminal or console or in a window.?
Please take into account that we are not looking over your shoulder and what you do not tell us, we can not know.

Same for this:

What i usually do is type “fsck”

Why would you do that? I (almost) never do that, thus certainly not “usually”.

And starting from this very unclear starting point, I do not even dare to interprete what follows.

So please be more precise in a step by step description on what you do and get.

Also, as said above, openSUSE 12.3 is a long time out of support, which means that not many other people will use it. Thus it is a bit difficult for other users to reconstruct your problems.

I’m sorry, let me explain more of the detail :
I’m using some computer in my office. there’s 2 - 3 computer that still use that for testing ( Even there’s still 1 that use 10.2 ).
Here’s an image of the condition of “Give root password for login” ( https://ibb.co/iwSXhp ), it usually happen random . every time i turn on my computer.

Sometimes it show the : Give root password for login, sometime grub.

So, this is happening for the 3 months ago, i already found the solution of this, just as i typed before. But this is always repeat every 2-3 weeks ( sometime grub, sometime give root password for login )

I use fsck ( because it always worked for it ) after type fsck and type y after fix<y>? show up. and i reboot it, and all normal. But as i said, it always show after 2-3 weeks.

The first picture shows that at boot you are entering emergency mode.

It then advices you to do

journalctl-b

to check the logs. Did you do that?

Just typing fsck because you may have read that somewhere isn’t really an intelligent action.

Btw, when after that fsck you can boot again and when it then returns after a few weeks, I assume that you have problems with the disk there. So better check it and/or replace it.

Okay, Thanks for the info. Appreciate it. i’ll try change the hardware ( hdd ) first then.
