hmmmmm…i can’t speak for the others here, but if you want me to
read those then gimme a URL…but, really: is there anything there with
a direct impact on this threads problem…then i’d say you should give
that concise info, along with a cite to the original…
wait, i just tried to find your problems in the RC and Milestone
releases and failed…have you changed your forum ID? (ParticlePeter
has a total of three post, all on the same day as this one…which is
the same day as ParticlePeter’s first day here.)

in the subject you say “fresh install”, by that do you mean this is the
first install of any Linux on this machine, and you retained neither
grub nor /home from any previous distro?

instead of a single, openSUSE normally default installs into three
partitions /, /home and swap: Do you have all of those? and what files
systems did you select to use?

i understand that to mean: you do log in with correct info but instead
of the desktop environment starting you instead get the back screen with
some text and then immediately the log in screen again, right?

ok, so you tried all those Session_Type things until now you only get a
purple screen, and never even see the log in screen, right?
word to the wise: it is seldom helpful to try every thing you can think
of and hope you accidentally find the solution…admittedly, that often
results in learning (which is fun) but my experience is that what is
most ofter learned is: Don’t do that again. (and, eventually many learn
that the “that” in that sentence means: Don’t do that
try-everything-you-can-think-of again until it stops working completely.)
> Where did I screw up,
wow, it is really hard to say at this point…
it could be as simple as a faulty download: Did you check the md5sum
code of the iso against the code provided for that iso on the download
page? Did it have any errors?
or, maybe you have a perfect iso but the burning to disk went wrong: Did
you do this prior to beginning the install process:

assuming you checked the iso and the burned disk, and both are perfect:
without knowing more i can only guess that one of these might make it
better…or worse:
- at the first green screen (where you can choose between openSUSE or
Win7) as soon as you see it start typing
nomodeset
then
press enter, and watch…if you get a log in screen, log in as yourself
and if it doesn’t start your desktop tell us what you see…if it does
go to the desktop then you probably need to install the best driver for
your particular video, here: http://tinyurl.com/37v9y7m
or
-
at that same first green screen: as soon as you see it press F5 and
then choose systemV (or maybe it says systemv) and press enter…if that
fixes your problem then there is a way to make that switch to systemv
automatic (but, i don’t know how…ask! or look though the hits from
here: http://tinyurl.com/bpyvmf7)
-
on that same first green screen do both 1 and 2 above and then press
enter
as far as i know none of those three things will hurt your system–but,
i may be wrong so READ my caveat prior to testing…in any event none
of those three fall into the category of try-everything-you-can-think-of.
