I suggest you search for and install the nvidia-settings package and install it. If you have the nVIDIA drivers loaded, this is how they are set. Anytime the kernel is updated, the nVIDIA drivers must be reloaded. When using the nVIDIA repository, this should occur automatically but nvidia-settings finds no driver, then you may be using the open source one for some reason. For anyone who would like to install the very latest nVIDIA driver the “hard-way”, have a look at my blogs on the subject:
I changed the video card for a GT 520 and it all works perfectly. So I can only assume the real problem is in the NVIDIA driver and its support for the 8400.

I have a GS8400 and it works fine in 12.1 and
12.2 RC2. I installed 12.2 with latest updated
Nvidia driver from the repo and 12.1 was
installed using James’ LNVHW script with no
problems.

Good you got it working and also good to hear the
GT520 works. I’m looking at replacing my GS8400
with a newer card, so I’ll look at the 520.
