hey
I’ve installed SUSE 11 on my laptop (Toshiba A300) with the pre-existence of windows vista … the installation process finished successfully, but when the system starts up and reaches the stage of showing the desktop, I hear the (welcome tone) but on the screen appears a strange black-white window with no reactions at all …
I tried to repair the installed system, but got nothing new …
p.s.1 The (Failsafe) mode runs well …
p.s.2 I tried KDE with 3.5 and 4.0 versions … same results
So “Failsafe” boot works OK? . . . if so, do this: Open /boot/grub/menu.lst as root (Alt-F2, type “kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst”). Look for the failsafe section, the kernel line, where is says "acpi=off . . . ". Write down the kernel arguments on that line (or just print the file). Now reboot and at the menu, highlight the standard boot line, and then in the Boot Options below type one of the kernel arguments. For example, type there:
acpi=off
And then boot. Probably it is one of these that is needed for your booting to work correctly. Once you have found it, go back to menu.lst like above, and edit the file to add that argument to the kernel line in the standard boot section. That will make it permanent.
