suse 11.4 screen display not working any more???

I recently upgraded to suse11.4 and everything worked fine for a few months. Suddenly after logging in (GUI - LXDE desktop) the background screen is all what I can see and no menus, not even right click opens anything. Same in KDE desktop. All I can do is throw myself out with Ctrl Alt and F1. startx returns that the server is already running. All I can do is using (as root) “rm -rf /tmp/X0-lock” and then “startx – :1”. That opens the GUI but only as root. What can I do that I can log in normally again?
By the way I tried to reinstall but I only get to loading drivers and then everything stops. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Uli

Have you checked to make sure your hard drive has no bad sectors?

please don’t run the GUI as root…

from the command line, can you log in as yourself?

is your drive full? corrupted?

Thanks for your reply.
You are right - I don’t want to open the GUI as root but this is the only way I can. Yes I can log in from commandline, either booting in runlevel 3 or after the computer hangs throwing it out with ctrl alt and f1.
The drive is not full - possibly corrupted. I tried to get into the live CD but this does not start the GUI either. As root I did an online update including an update of the video driver (ATI Radeon - is in the repositories) but no change there. Trying to click repair on the install DVD but this hangs on loading the driver as well. THis on both 11.3 and 11.4 DVDs from which I installed previously. So I don’t think it is the DVD.

In the meantime the 53 minutes of the GSmartControl extended test is over and it states the test of the disk is completed without errors. So thanks, gogalthorp, but it does not look as if the harddrive has bad sectors - at least from the above test.

What command did you run to see if the root partition was not full?

please show us the output of entering the following into a terminal

df -h

and copy/paste the output back to this thread using the instructions

i hope you don’t mean you logged into LXDE as root, and did that…

running as root because that is the ‘only way’ is just an avenue to more
problems…

Thanks, Denver
here is the output of df -h
uli@ulinux:~> df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs 46G 4.6G 39G 11% /
devtmpfs 239M 232K 239M 1% /dev
tmpfs 246M 4.0K 246M 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 46G 4.6G 39G 11% /
/dev/sda3 8.9G 549M 7.9G 7% /home
10.10.10.2:/mnt/md1/ulimnt
917G 89G 782G 11% /home/uli/ulimnt
And as I said before I looged as root into LXDE and did an online update then logged out and rebooted. I normally don’t do this but from commandline the startx – :1 only worked as root and I was surprised to be in the GUI as I did not manage to get there before. Quickly did the update and rebooted. Of course I could have done the update from commandline but this took only a few minutes…
THe other strange thing - today I started this laptop and it booted straight into the GUI as if nothing happened. I don’t know what was going on. This is from Xorg.0.log:
25.297] (II) LoadModule: “fglrx”
25.318] (WW) Warning, couldn’t open module fglrx
25.318] (II) UnloadModule: “fglrx”
25.318] (EE) Failed to load module “fglrx” (module does not exist, 0)
25.318] (II) LoadModule: “radeonhd”
25.320] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeonhd_drv.so
25.585] (II) Module radeonhd: vendor=“AMD GPG”
25.586] compiled for 1.9.3, module version = 1.3.0
25.586] Module class: X.Org Video Driver
25.586] ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 8.0
25.586] (II) LoadModule: “ati”
So could it be that previously the computer tried to use the fglrx module for some reason and not the radeon??? Unfortunately I don’t understand most of the logs text…
