SuSE 11.4 NetBIOS server will not start

Attempting to set up a Samba server. Using YaST–>System Services (Runlevel) to enable “nmb” results in the following:
/etc/init.d/nmb start returned 7 (program is not running):

From a terminal in su mode
#cd /etc/init.d
#./nmb start
Starting Samba NMB daemon startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/nmbd: 1 failed

Hmm … anything in the following logs right after you get the failure message?

Do those files exist in /etc/samba? If so, what are the permissions on them?

Also are you trying to just setup a SAMBA server, or a NetBIOS name server? Maybe you could try going through the YaST SAMBA server module … and see if it works then. I’m normally not a big fan of troubleshooting with GUI tools, but maybe doing this will help…

There is a problem with ApArmor and Samba. Go to:
Yast > Novell AppArmor > AppArmor Control Panel > Configure profiles
and set AppArmor to complain for both usr.sbin.nmbd and usr.sbin.smbd rather
than enforce.
