Suse 11.3 Server slow Network throw-put until starting web browser on the server

hi @ all

i am running a Suse 11.3 Server with 2 NIC´s and internal DNS server.
i have a 100 Mbit Internet Connection.
if i run a speed test on vario´s sides i only get 10 Mbit on all computers in my Network, but if i make a ssh -X session on the server and launch Firefox on it, and i go on a dynamically loading webpage (so the Firefox on the server loads permanently dater from the web because there is a counter on the side) the throw-put run´s up to 98 Mbit from my internal to external network.
If i stop Firefox on the the throw-put slow´s down to 10 Mbit.

This seems to me like the server goes in a save mode if there is no traffic from it self.
Have anyone a idea ?

computer to computer on your internal network is limited the max speed
of the networking cards/router/wires/etc involved, right? that must be
about 10 Mbit…

and, if you ssh to the server (at 10 Mbit) which is connected to a 100
Mbit external connection then your server connects to distant
servers (outside of your internal network) at the highest speed
available–that might be 100 Mbit, right?

so, no problem, right?

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

NO.

MyNetwork:
CableModem SUSE 11.3 Server HP-Switch iMAC
[100Mbit Modem]—[100 Mbit NIC —SuseFirewall–DHCP-DNS–1GB NIC]—[100Mbit Switch]-------[1GBBit NIC ]

I start a download with my iMac Filesize 1GB my download speed is between 10 -12 Mbit. —> to slow
i open a ssh from imac to Server ssh -X -l root 192.168.2.1 and fire up firefox or Konqueror and go on a dynamic loading webpage so firefox have to refresh the webside
permanently my download speed (throw put ) grows up to 95Mbit from internal network (iMac ) to external network (inet).
The file i download is not on the same side which is opened on the server.
This seems to me like, the Server awake´s the NIC if he need it (for it´s own download).
But this only work if i start Firefox or Konqueror.
i have tried to start a endless ping from the server to google but it not increase my speed.
So i start Firefox on the server i have a Bandwidth up to 95 Mbit from local Network [iMac or Laptop] to Internet
if i quit Firefox on the Server the speed slow´s down to 10-16 Mbit.
