Suse 11.3 HDMI audio - No sound!

Hello,

having some problems with HDMI-Audio on my HTPC: I don’t get sound out of HDMI port! For system info look there: Sysprofile

OS is Suse11.3 64Bit with KDE now!

At “System-Settings/Multimedia/Audio Output” there are the following devices in the given order:
HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev1 Analog)
HDA NVidia (ALC662 rev2 Digital)
HDA NVidia, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Audio)

That’s consistent with the connector layout of the mainboard. Playing “Test sound” while marked the HDMI Audio is not causing any output with HDMI, while analog works just fine!

I also installed the nVidia prop drivers with the packet manager.

In YAST there is one card found in the sound section::
Idex=0 and Card Model=MCP79 High Definition Audio

I hope there is a simple solution for a linux noob like me.

I would open up the KDE menu, select Personnel Settings and on the General Tab, Computer Administration and select Multimedia. Under Audio Preference Select Audio Output and then on the right, select each listed device and press the test button. Move all working devices to the top of the list, though I normally put my primary connection at the top of the list. Your TV must be able to decode PCM audio for normal tasks and can not expect all sound to be in Dolby Digital format. You might want to check your Backend setting is set for xine, which most of us use.

I have a script that you can use to play around with your audio, though there is no way to know if it will help:

Further, I normally open up the KDE mixer (kmix), and select configure channels and drag everything there over to the open window. I would start something playing and then try muting, unmuting and raising level controls to see if anything helps. For instance, I had one sound card that had a RAW output that had to be muted for sound to work. Often PCM controls are set to minimum sound. I had one setup where if the headphone was muted, you got no sound even though there was no headphone jack to be found. And I could go on about kmix settings.

You need to make sure you have all of the Restricted Sound Formats are installed for many sources to work like playing movies or MP3 files. I have a script that help with that as well here:

Thanks for the help so far but there I have discovered the next problem …

Playing around with KMixer channels has helped a little … activating the channel ‘IEC958 2’ finally got me some sound to the HDMI port. When I press ‘Test sound’ in the Multimedia setting I’m getting the ‘log on piano sound’ … as bad as this sound is, it’s nice to hear at least SOMETHING ;).

VLC plays sound too now, but it’s heavily laggy?! I first thought this is an issue with the DVD drive but then I’ve played some movies from the hard disc and they have the same sound lags too! The movie runs smooth but every 10 up to 20 seconds the sound is gone for one second and resumes then …

After I’ve descovered this lags, I would like to test it with Kaffeine but Kaffeine still won’t play any sound regardless of the file-type!!!

ANY IDEAS how to get Kaffeine working and getting rid of these irritating sound lags??

My first question is, have you ran mmcheck yet and got all of your multimedia working? As for Kaffeine, it is possible to get it to Dolby Digital passthrough, but there are issues to contend with. I have a thread on configuring Kaffeine you can read here:

You did not indicate if you have more than one optical drive, but if you do, you might want to read through this thread:

I’d really like to but there are none to speak of … after I ran the script it’s showing me the main menu (1-15). I’ve so far updated the repos (1), checked my vlc installation (10) and ran the two validations (14&15) but these two don’t seem to do anything => No output, after pressing ‘Enter’ again it’s back to the main menu. Does ‘no output’ mean: “all is right in there”?

Oh and here, some new info I discovered while testing:

  • AMAROK plays my mp3 files just perfectly fine (NO audio lags) but when I start VLC and play the same file with VLC after closing AMAROK completely then the sound lags return.
  • Tested Kaffeine with a few channel settings in KMixer, still no sound possible.
  • Installed xine per zypper, played around with some driver settings (Auto, ALSA, …), same result as Kaffeine, no sound possible.
  • Firefox is also ‘speechless’.

I don’t get it, media players like kaffeine and xine play no sound at all regardless the source (DVD, HDD) … and VLC is playing sound but producing audio lags – what the hell is wrong with that thing? I really hope you have more ideas :wink: because I’m completely stuck here!

I don’t get it, media players like kaffeine and xine play no sound at all regardless the source (DVD, HDD) … and VLC is playing sound but producing audio lags – what the hell is wrong with that thing? I really hope you have more ideas :wink: because I’m completely stuck here!

So I do think it is possible you don’t understand what you are trying to get to in mmcheck. I am using 64 bit and so this would be different for a 32 bit setup.

**1 . Check for any Missing Dependencies for ALL Installed Packages … **

I run this first and again I run it last, to make sure there are no dependance errors on your package installation. I normally allow it to update my repositories on the first pass.

**2 . Display All openSUSE Repositories as Entered in your Computer … **

Now you look at all of your entered repositories. If you have more than four that are enabled, that could be a problem. I normally set the priority (a lower number) on Packman and openSUSE updates. If you decide to upgrade your KDE version (like to 4.5) it may need to be a lower number than openSUSE update. You can post your repository listing if you have a quiestion.

3 . Check for any Packages Installed from the VideoLAN Repository …**

libdvdcss -> VideoLAN Project (VideoLAN - VLC: Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS!)

You should have either NONE or ONE package from VideoLAN and that is Libdvdcss.

Sooooo, I think there are
(a) tooo many repos. So how can I remove them quickly?
(b) some vlc-packages that shoudn’t be there. How to remove??
(c) some packages, which should be from packman but are currently from opensuse. How to fix this
(d) some not installed packages (e.g. mplayer, gstreamer & totem) . How can I install them (forcing packman as source)

So you have a mess right now. Step one is to go into YaST / Software Repositories and disable or delete the VideoLAN repository. I would also select the Packman repsoitory and make its priority an 80 to put it at the top of the list for updates. Next, one at a time, search for the files shown from VideoLAN in test 3. As you find each one, go to the Versions Tab & Select Packman, which should be at the top of the List. If there is only one item shown, I normally elect to delete the file. As you start to switch to Packman, other files must also be changed. You will be offered two or three options for each problem. Always allow Vendor Change (to Packman), Never break ANY dependencies and try to not Downgrade to an inferior program. Just go slow. Once you have VideoLAN down to the one program, Libdvdcss, you go to step 5 and do the same thing, switch to Packman. Install missing files as well. Until you can get a listing like mine, sound issues can still exist.

Why nothing but AMAROK, System sounds and VLC works with sound (No Kaffeine, no MPlayer … e.t.c.)???

Solved this one now:

Create a file "asound.conf] in “/etc”: e.g.:

sudo kate /etc/asound.conf

Type the following:

pcm.!default {

type hw
card 0
device 3
}

… where ‘device’ is your desired output device (“3” in my case, because device 3 is NVidia HDA HDMI output) and ‘card’ is your sound card (I think “0” works fine in most cases :wink: )
