Suse 11.2 Firefox file dialog broken

Using a freshly installed 64-bit OpenSuse with Suse and Packman repository and everything updated, firefox will not open or save a file anymore. The same holds for right clicking on an image and trying “Save image as”. The dialog is not coming up anymore.

Being logged in as root firefox behaves normal, so I guess somewhere a permission is wrong. Does anybody know hot to fix this problem?

Thanks

Martin

try this: copy and paste this code in a terminal

mv.mozilla .mozilla-old

It will start a new FF profile, we can get your bookmarks back from the renamed old folder if necessary.

Now try FF

Now, that had some strange effects:

  1. firefox coming up WITH old bookmarks, although .mozilla has been moved
  2. after a minute or so: firefox does not come up at all anymore, no new
    .mozilla is created
  3. after logout, login: firefox comes up again, new ,mozilla created
  4. kaffeine does not come up anymore (apperently and endless loop
    eating away all available memory

Killing kaffeine, deleting the NEW .mozilla and renaming .mozillaold make firefox file dialog work (same for right-click, save as)

Kaffeine is still not coming up, so deleting the configuration in .kde4. Kaffein starts again.

I have no idea how this can be, but that is what I got.

Martin

Sounds like you may have had a stray FF session running when you did the delete.
So are you good now or what?

YOu may want to try this thread to see if addresses your problem.

one way that might fix it is to not break your system by logging
into KDE/Gnome/etc as root…

do NOT do that, because it will silently mess up and break your
system…it can and often does cause problems when you once again
log in as a normal user…

sure, you might do it one time and nothing happen…maybe twice or
four times…or maybe the first time you do it…

not to mention that running any browser as root is like asking China
to install a root kit in your computer! see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Root_kit

i am not talking about don’t do it because you might accidentally do a
mistake…or, it is ok as long as you don’t do it often or are REAL
careful…no, even if you make no finger slips while doing it, you
still made a BIG mistake by just logging into KDE/Gnome/etc as root.

besides, you will never solve or successfully trouble shoot any
problem by simply logging in as root “to see” if it works okay then
(because you think permissions might be messed up…guess how they
got messed up! (hint: permissions do NOT change themselves while you
are asleep)…

now, maybe the fault with firefox is totally unrelated to some
previous log in as root…but, we will never know it didn’t come from
that unless you never do it.
