Forgive me for asking, but one thread I read said to edit the menu.lst (how do I do this while installing)?
I am not real familiar with the Linux partitioning system, so any help is greatly appreciated. I have tried installing SuSE11.1 64bit and 32bit with no success. I want to keep running Linux. I would run straight SuSE if the gaming were a little better. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Sorry for asking but are you trying to dualboot windows and opensuse? If so can you discribe you drive setup? As in, have you got 1 hard drive or more, 1 partition or more, etc…
The OpenSUSE installer generally does a great job in dualbooting OpenSUSE and Windows XP and should not require any alteration such as editing you menu.lst. If things go wrong it it a way to manually alter things but there is a good chance there is no need.
As an example, I have windows XP (installed first) and OpenSUSE on 1 hard drive and did not need to do anything during the OpenSUSE installation. It reconised Windows and created a fully functioning dualboot without me altering anything. I suppose I was lucky but this is how it goes in most cases.

Hi – can you explain what you mean by “without success” in more detail.
Don’t try to edit menu.lst until the installation is finished. Then (if it’s necessary) you edit in a superuser text editor invoked by there commands:
- KDE user → kdesu kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst
- Gnome user → gnomesu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
When installing on the same physical drive as vista, use vista’s resizing tool to make space on the hard drive for Linux before you start to install Linux. Then, don’t allow the openSUSE installer to resize or otherwise alter the windows partition.
Hi, Yes I am dual booting SuSE and Vista on a sata hdd, there are the partitions alreaady on there from my attempted installations. By attempted I mean, the first time most of the ‘packages’ would not install and the next, the 32 bit installed but when I went to reboot I would see a flash of the boot loader and then It would say operating system not found.
OK then follow this:
When installing on the same physical drive as vista, use vista’s resizing tool to make space on the hard drive for Linux before you start to install Linux. Then, don’t allow the openSUSE installer to resize or otherwise alter the windows partition.
plus use vista’s partitioner to remove all Linux partitions before the re-install of openSUSE. Just follow the defaults. Don’t add any extra software changes, just the defaults during the install. After the first boot and it settles down, do an online update using Yast → Online Updates. Do it twice or three times until there are no more updates, to get the necessary bug fixes loaded. Then you could add software or modify the software if you wish to.
If you’re having trouble installing when extra USB drives are connected, disconnect them for the duration of the installation.
