Suse 11.1 Sound Card Not working Dell Dimension 5150

System Spec:

Standard Dell 5150 Dimension, which has on board sound card.
OS: Suse 11.1

Hi Just recovered my computer from destruction caused by ATI. I created new user with standard xorg.conf apparently kde4 files caused the display issue.

Since i have created new user i am unable to Play any sound at all. i.e no audio.

Before the graphics thing messed up i had sound/audio working properly.

I think the worst thing is i could not see my sound card and driver in YAST

I have :

updated YAST
tried repairing Suse 11.1 from disc

Symptoms:

  • No Speaker Icon in System Tray
  • No Sound Option in Yast
  • Only Config Desktop has sound option where the only one device listed and grayed

After a bit of struggle with a lot of other libs and config in yast i can see Speaker icon in system tray but the only option available is Microphone even after opening a Mixer i can not see anything else.

tried using both outlets for audio at front and back as well. No sound.

I have gone through following posts

Is it possible for anyone to have a look and let me know if i can fix this and get my sound back.

if you require more information about computer hardware let me know. thanks

No Sound option in Yast2 under Hardware? Do you have the yast2-sound package installed?

while running alsaconf

i just found this

Loading driver...
Starting sound driver: hda-intel done

i have added current user to audio group and restarted machine reinstalled (updated) all alsa libs but still same thing

The diagnostic script indicates only your usb device (web cam with a mic ?? ) is being recognized. I am suspicious that the 05-29 alsa rpms were broken. I note there is a new version as of 06-01. Try updating your alsa again per that site and see if that fixes the problem. Alsa-update - openSUSE

If it fails, write a bug report, as I believe there may be something wrong with the most current alsa rpm builds. http://en.opensuse.org/Submit_a_Bug

Thanks Doc. you are right yast2-sound was missing. Now that i can see the sound card is not configure when i edit it and do Quick automatic setup. i got another error message saying:

An Error occurred during the installation of

82801G(ICH7 Family) high definition Audio controller

the kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

Now that the things are looking familiar and sorted…
Ran through Alsa Update and icon came back in system tray after restart.

Job Done,

Thanks Doc and thanks oldcpu

Now that things are well i am going to start a new thread to setup my web cam with amsn and gyach etc,… any idea which section is best for it.

Thanks again guys.

the audio playback device HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog) does not work Falling back to default

Now i get this message every time i log in at the top right corner of the screen. i think its knotify4 which displays this and takes 91% of memory and leaving nothing for other processes and system struggles at that time.

secondly what is Plasma Dashboard ? I mean expect hidding icons and everything from desktop what it does?

Anyone any idea ?

I believe a number of users have reported this. There are a more than a fewthreads here, where users have posted solutions that worked for them:

Thanks for your help.

problem is fixed. thanks

Super! Glad to read this.

I use openSUSE 11.1 on 64 bit (2.6.27.25-0.1-default x86_64) on KDE 4.2 and I am not able to configure my sound card:
When I (using yast) choose Hardware/Sound and try to add my card (Intel / ICH9(HDA)), I get an error popup saying:
“The kernel module snd-hda-intel for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters”.

I updated my alsa packages and the alsa driver modules to version 1.0.20 as described at the link you posted above and restarted the system. Note that on installing the alsa-driver-kmp-default I got the following warnings (don’t know if they are relevant):

Additional rpm output:
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.27.25-0.1-default/kernel/drivers/media/video/saa7134/saa7134-alsa.ko needs unknown symbol snd_card_new
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.27.25-0.1-default/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx88/cx88-alsa.ko needs unknown symbol snd_card_new
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.27.25-0.1-default/kernel/drivers/media/video/em28xx/em28xx-alsa.ko needs unknown symbol snd_card_new
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.27.25-0.1-default/kernel/drivers/staging/go7007/go7007.ko needs unknown symbol snd_card_new
24403 blocks

But the update changed nothing, the same error occurs on trying to add the sound card.

Do you have an idea of what I could try next? Should I open a bug?

You could try staring a new help thread on the forum.

IMHO the subject line on this thread is not condusive to focussing in on your problem. Tagging on to someone else’s thread can always be problematic … Again, you are likely best off to try with your own thread on the forum.

I note you have KDE-4.2. … That does not come with openSUSE, but requires factory or KDE repositories, and as such is not the type of openSUSE configuration that I support, so if you posted in this thread to get my attention, I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you by saying I don’t support KDE-4.2 audio problems on openSUSE-11.1. Years ago I would play with my KDE configuration (going for newer updates) and eventually I determined I did not have the patience to deal with the incompatiblities that could arise, including in some (but not all) cases breaking the sound.

You could try writing a bug report, but again, because you are using KDE-4.2, you may get the same answer. … but maybe not.

Right, now I remember that KDE 4.1.3 officially comes with 11.1, I didn’t think about it before posting. Well, thank you at least for answering! I guess there is no point in opening a new thread or a bug if it’s not supported.

Others have sound working with KDE-4.2.x. So if you start a new thread with a title something like:

Sound not working w/openSUSE 11.1 on 64 bit (2.6.27.25-0.1-default x86_64) on KDE 4.2

You could try going thru the audio troubleshooting guide I wrote, but it may not help given your openSUSE/KDE version, as I made no allowance for that combination when writing the guide: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE
