SuSE 11.1 Nokia E51 and KInternet USB modem HowTo

Hi Guys

The last couple of days I have been struggling to get my Nokia E51 to connect to the Internet under SuSE 11.1. The basic problem is that when KInternet dials, the modem connects and then suddenly disconnects for no obvious reason. I have decided to migrate to SuSE from Vista and the only thing that held me back was the fact that I could not get my Nokia E51 to work under SuSE. Yes, I am new to Linux, but I am getting there…

I am posting my solution here so that (hopefully) other people trying the same will not have to pull every single last hair out of their heads - mine is slowly growing back now…

Here is what I have figured out (two days later):

INTERNET IN SuSE 11.1 WITH NOKIA E51

[1]: Install KInternet via Yast
[2]: Install smpppd via Yast
[3]: Make smpppd active at startup:
#:> chkconfig smpppd on
[4]: Plug Nokia E51 in via USB cable and select PC-Suite on Phone.
[5]: In Kinternet, select Configure with Yast2 and configure the modem.
It should be listed as /dev/ttyACM0
[6]: In the modem details section, change modem speed to 460800
[7]: Add the modem init strings:
INIT STRING 1: ATZ
INIT STRING 2: AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
INIT STRING 3: AT +CGDCONT=,“internet”
[8]: I used the phone number: *99#.
The user name and password were both set to “internet”.
(for Vodacom South Africa)
[9]: Open KInternet Log to see whats happening.
[10]: Dial In Via KInternet…

For reference: I found the third INIT string in the advanced configuration section
of the Nokia E51 modem under Vista’s device manager.
I hope this helps someone out there.
