Is “ata1” in this case a CD/DVD device or a harddisk?

hi Chrysantine,
thank you for your replay. In my case it is a Hard disk.

Regards
Shaiju

It seems the system is having trouble reading/write to it and is thus having issues (and would cause freezes. I would suggest backing up the contents of that hard drive and replacing it - it’s most likely going bad.

hi Chrysantine,
thanks for the rplay
that means Hard Disk issue…can i overcome the issue without changing the hard drive(like formatting the harddrive)…
Does suse support sata hard drives;

I have another suse machine…it showing [drm:i915_getparam] ERROR Unknown parameter 5
.and system is little slow.can u give an advise about that…

Suse supports SATA drives without any problem.

  1. If your drive is damaged there will probably no other way than to change it.

Eventually, if your drive is IDE and you did mount your system from the scratch you could look for the following issues:

  1. If IDE HDD and IDE-CD drives are on the same controller, this can lead to problems. Make sure that (if you are using IDE HDD and IDE DVD/CD drives), that they are using two different IDE controllers.

  2. One possible problem with IDE could also be a not well attached IDE cable and/or a broken IDE cable. Check whether the cable is well plugged (in the HDD and in the controller). If you have a spare cable try to change the cable and see if the problems still presents.

  3. Note that, if your IDE drive is still one with jumper setting, the "cable-select" jumper setting might lead to problems with certain controllers. This is a hardware related problem and will affect any installation. If your IDE HDD is master (what a system disk should be), then set it explicitly as master and not on “cable select”.

  4. in all cases make immediately a backup if you have important data on the PC. In case you do not know how, you may ask in this forum. With Linux it is very easy to copy a whole home directory with few commands on an external HDD.

On you question about the other PC. You need to post the log extract in order to make us understand.
Cheers.

thank you for the replay.I have changed the IDE cable and now looking pretty good…0:00:1d.3

[drm:i915_getparam] ERROR Unknown parameter 5
is for what I know an intel driver bug. Did you try to update to the lastes available intel video driver?
If you did, and the problem presented afterwards: did you try to downgrade to the official intel video driver?
One of the two solution should be the right for you.

Which opensSuse version is running on that PC?
Regards
