It is not clear to me which way you upgraded, from what to what? Did you upgrade to openSUSE 11.3 from 11.1 or did you upgrade to 11.1 from something even lower?

The normal thing is to suggest you consider a full install, particularly if you maintain a separate /home partition, which does not need to be formatted. Upgrading may not replace all files like you would hope.

Thank You,

Ok dear friend thanks a lot for your answer.

When i wrote " normal upgrade" i mean a update from updater applet … i apologize . I know that suse 11.1 has come to the end ,
end the best choice would be upgrading to suse 11.3 but the pc in argument is not mine …and owner does not like changes …
Home dir is still separate and upgrade to a earlier issue could be possible , but about once i had to figth with misconfigured configuration files
and prefer to not replay experience.
The machine is p4 2.8 g 1.5 ddr2 ati video card .
KDE 4.5.2 fully functinal before updating

thanks in advance Nic

Up grading from 11.1 to 11.3 is not recommended, too many changes.

I’m not sure how you update the distro from the Update applet??? Did you use zypper commands? or Yast??

So you did a security update of some sort and now the PC will not shut down. KDE 4.5.2 is out on the edge and problems are possible. I surely would not have loaded that on openSUSE 11.1 but I don’t know of an easy way to go back. Since I think that openSUSE is starting up OK, it may be that you need to search on KDE in Software Management, select the versions TAB and on every KDE4 program, make sure the version is the most recent for 4.5.2 in case you have mixed old and new programs. openSUSE 11.1 is still supported, but when openSUSE 11.4 comes out next year, it will be dropped shortly thereafter. You are still good for now, but loading leading edge KDE is not recommended on anything you can not afford to wipe out and start over on.

Thank You,

Hi …
on my own pc’s i have KDE 4.5.2 and suse 11.3 booth i warrants you that KDE 4.5.2 works wery fine , without frezzes and hesitations and advise everyone to install it . and worked so fine on 11.1 , before this (f…) update .

My final question is the following … do anyone knows were can i find the process or the position of the script ( if existing) which starts invoking shutdown button?

best regards Nic

So my suggestion would be to open YaST / Software Manager and search for KDM and check it out on the versions tab to make sure it is at 4.5.2 as you say you are.

Next, I would consider adding in a new user, logging in as the new user and see if the shutdown works OK. If it does, it is a configuration file problem in your old self. I have a script file that can be used to view your many error logs on your computer to perhaps figure out why the shutdown does not work. Message #11 has the most recent version of Slave.

Since I have not see any sort of general outcry that the shutdown function no longer works in KDE 4.5, it must be an update issue of some sort in your system, but I don’t use KDE 4.5 myself and not sure what else to look at.

Thank You,

Ok … im shure to … this problem is really strange and its first time that appens to me . tomorrw i try your suggestion ad ill report you results …
If you have a second HD to use for experiments you could install another 11.3 suse and add :
Index of /repositories/KDE:/Distro:/Factory/openSUSE_11.3
to test new exellent features KDE4.5.2 ;)

ciao ciao Nic
