I’v had various glitches, nothing major using the 64bit suse. They are really annoying. I need feedback as to which (32bit vs 64bit) you use and recommend to others in your experience in previous versions. Thanks.

I use 64 bit and the only problem i had when i switched was flash in Firefox.
Which i fixed after googling.

if you don’t have >4gb of memory or do heavy number crunching like video encoding there is no compelling reason to run x64, in fact due to the larger 64 pointers the system might even be slower and use more memory.
I use x64 though and have zilch issues now with the x64 java and flash plugins.

I have just installed 11.1 64bit today, after reading some of the threads I was expecting some problems, but so far nothing. Even got Flash working with Firefox.
Running 64 bits on 3 systems, all working fine never experienced any problems due to them being 64 bits.
Same here so far. Flash is working out of the box in firefox and I only had to install some 32bit libraries to run skype.
The problem areas for 64 bit are disappearing as 3rd party non-OSS stuff like Sun Java, and Adobe Flash are available for 64 bit Linux now.
There are a number of reasons to prefer x86_amd. Now if you upgrde a graphics card, it’s likely to have 512MB now, and 1GB RAM is common. With a 3/1 split on process address space between applications and kernel, 1GB of graphics RAM doesn’t leave much for the kernel to work in (hint: 1-1=0). Any speed issue due to slight increase in code size, should be counteracted by the cleaner architecture, and the larger number of registers.
The kernel is also not going to have to do gymnastics with page address extensions, or be creative in using high memory. The 32 bit PAE kernels develop problems if you go above 8GB, and Linus has commented that he now feels it was a mistake to implement that feature at all.
There’s a thread elsewhere, asking ppl, whether they’re happy with 64 bit, and the consensus was that they were.
