I´m running suse11.0 kernel 26.25.20-0.5-pae i686,KDE 3.5.9 together with windowsXP on the same harddisk .Linux runs still perfectly well,but since a few days passwd root is rejected.Using su root the same happens.repositorys fail to connect too.

when given after trying an su in a terminal?
when given after launching YaST?
when give after initial boot, on login to KDE?
did you recently change the root password?
did you recently manually open the file /etc/passwd ??

hi platinum,it is rejected after trying su in terminal, as well after launching yast.boot, grub and kde no problem,no paSSwd root needed. I did not change passwd root.I did not open /etc/passwd.I juSt found out that I cant login SUSEforum under linux even when cookieS and JavaScript are activated in Opera.I had to login under windowS XP.The only change i made waS changing the firewall configuration to max Save.I even changed the keyboard SuSpecting a defect. ThankS

i see in your note above that in many but not all instances of what
should be an “s” is instead a capitalized “S”…
so, if your password is (for example) my.safe.password and you are
unknowingly giving my.Safe.paSSword it is no wonder you are locked
out…same with the openSUSE forum…
your problem is not with your root password, but with something to do
with your typing, or your setup…
and, as always: if you change something and then your machine is
broken, UNchange the same thing and see if that ‘fixes’ your machine
back to working, again…that is, change your firewall back to what
worked!!! if you do that then you may also be able to go back to the
keyboard which was working fine before you started making changes, as
root…
if you can’t change back, then just restore from your most recent,
working backup…
