SuSe 11.0 Lost CDROM drive

This has been a showstopper for me. Have installed several times - result always same. After the first boot from HD, SuSe 11.0 cannot properly read media in the CD/DVD drive. Tried loading ide-generic - nope. HWINFO --cdrom hangs and takes about 20 min. before completing. Always says there is no media in the drive. Tried different drives - nope. I just don’t understand how it can lose the drive after installation (from DVD) completes. Anybody have any ideas?

Is just not clear what is your issue. So you installed 11.0 and it boots fine you get in and then you cannot read anything from the cdrom? if yes let us know and then we will go from there.

as i was reading through other problems I found this comment from oldcpu :
Now, there is a bug in 11.1 that will likely take a month or more before it is fixed. That bug is related to permissions on CD/DVD drives.

Try adding your users to group “cdrom” and group “disk” and then restart your PC and try again.

This can be done by:

YAST >> Security and Users >> User Management >> “select your user” >> Edit >> Details >> Groups >> check “cdrom” and “disk” and then click on “ACCEPT”. Don’t forget after exiting YaST, you need to restart.
I hope that works. it helps a lot to read problems other people are encountering, at least it helps me and i got a habit on doing that. Good luck

Hi,

After first boot to HD, you need to run the updater applet or Online Update from Yast. This will pull in a lot of updates, including a Hal update which will then allow you to use your optical drive correctly.

Good Luck,

Ian

you can run hwinfo --cdrom which will give you some details about it.

Ian:
Thanks for the suggestion - that seemed to make the most sense. Upgrade took about 3 hours. Result: - nope.
Maybe old laptop & old bios equals no SuSe 11.0?! BTW, 10.2, everything works OK.
Anyway, I do appreciate the suggestion!
