suse 11.0 +kde 4 = grief

Whats going on with the updates to 11.0 and Kde 4. You just get every thing working well then along come updates and screw it all up.

After much wasted time I reinstalled Suse 11.0
Kde 4. But Libxine 1 will not install It needs a new vertion that is not available. Ok lets go to 1-click 4.1 kde, unable to install with 109 errors.

what a great way to convert windows users.

If any one knows either what I have done wrong,or what i need to do to get things working again please be so kind as to let me know

Thank you

maybe you missed the part that said:

"7. KDE-4.0.x NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEWBIES
Please note KDE-4.0.x is still very experimental and it is not recommended for
Newbies. It is intended mainly for developers and cutting edge hackers or those
who live and breath on the cutting edge of the latest software updates. Newbies,
during the install please select KDE-3.5.9 or Gnome desktops instead, in order
to obtain more stability.

Further to the KDE-4.0x caution, please note the Live CD for KDE ONLY comes with
KDE-4.0.x and not KDE-3.5.9. to get KDE-3.5.9 one must install off of the DVD
and not the Live CD."

Hi
thank you for the reply. I am not sure that I can be classed as a newbie I have played with Suse since 10.0.

Rc1 worked fine gold worked fine. Kde 4 with a few small problems worked fine. The mistake I made was the complete reinstall from my boxed set.

I use Kino,Kunfu. dvdcopy, and K9copy. Kaffeine, mplayer, and with the exception of Kino they no longer work.

Kde 3.5 install is much better,Yast is very fast now but now has problems from the updates. Which is why I moved to Kde4.I am all for the updates but not when stop vast sections working

My gripe is Kde 4.1 is realeasd, why, as it is not stable, and I
could not upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1. Is there a DVD Suse 11.0 plus Kde 4.1 download.Other users must be haveing the same problem.

It seems that I must go back to 10.3 as slow as it was.

In this case even packmans software does not function.

I know this sounds like a rant but I like suse 11 I just do not understand why they pad it out with software that does not work.

regards
rushman

Perhaps beacause KDE4.1 is still in BETA… unlike KDE4.0… hence the reason KDE 4.1 is in Factory repos and not the STABLE repos.

To me, the question is why Suse 11.0 with KDE 3.5.9 is not good enough.

Yes, the release notes say “Not for Newbies”. It wasn’t meant as a slight on
you, just to bring to your attention that without a LOT of care and
attention, KDE 4 may cause issues. It’s a major rewrite. Not quite like
starting over, but almost so. Yes, there will be bugs. Issues, problems.

I use k9copy, dvdcopy, devede, kaffeine and mplayer quite often, never had an
issue with them. I’m using KDE 3.5.9. I too started out with KDE 4 from
the initial install… I don’t consider myself a newbie either… But I
found that KDE 4 just didn’t YET have the stability I needed to use it
day-to-day.

KDE 4 has improved greatly since the initial release. I’ll likely
install it on my little machine to try it out again soon. I certainly haven’t
given up on it… but I won’t use it on my production machine… no
‘non-newbie’ would do that.

Install again with KDE 3.5.9, enjoy it… and keep an eye on the KDE 4.x
development. Sooner than we expect, it will be taking us to places KDE 3.x
couldn’t… but the new code needs time to settle in, bugs and typos to be
found. There are those brave souls out there who try and test and prod and
tweak… we get the best info from them! (yay to them!).

Oh, and you can install KDE 3 and KDE 4 side-by-side, I’ve heard it’s
supported… Perhaps I’ll try it on this machine at some time.

oldcpu released a KDE 3 live CD today:

Live CD for openSUSE-11.0 KDE-3.5.9 is available now - openSUSE Forums

Maybe grab that instead :).

PS. I believe “newbie” in the case of KDE4 means “not a programmer or member of the KDE4 development team” :D.

Thank you OldCPU!

yep…i wish that part about n00b was not there…but, i didn’t write it…my
first SUSE (switching from RH) was 9.2 and i’ll not put 11.0 and KDE4 on my
machine i depend on every day…

i JUST read this in another thread and am gonna start quoted it, instead of the
one with “newbie” in it:

"KDE 4 is still very young. It is recommended only for experienced
users who can hack their way around problems. If you have not upgraded
from the installed 4.0 to 4.1, you can try that; 4.1 is much better.
But still, it is undergoing active development and at times things
don’t work right. You would just have to see. The better bet would be
to install KDE 3.5.9; you can do that and leave KDE 4.1 installed, too.
KDE 3.5.9 is very mature and stable. You could then use 3.5.9 as your
primary gui, and occasionally update your 4.1 and check it out; when
your 4.1 is stable, you can switch to it as your primary. Many very
experienced openSUSE users are sticking with 3.5.9 until 4.x has had
time to mature.

I am a new to SUSE 11.0, and unfortunately KDE 4.1 is not ready for me or the other way around.

Question: Someone above said you can have KDE 3.5.9 alongside 4.1, I guess he ment you can switch back and forth.
I would like to install 3.5.9, how do I do it? Do I have to reinstall the whole thing again are what?

Thanks, but I’m just the messenger. C.Gonçalves deserves all the credit for the KDE-3.5.9 liveCD (installable):
Carlos Gonçalves: openSUSE 11.0 KDE3 Live CDst

This is wonderful news to me, as I might install openSUSE-11.0 on my mother’s PC over Christmas timeframe (maybe Jan-2009) and her PC does not have a DVD drive. Her PC is also limited in hard drive space, and I do not want to put 4.0.4 on her PC, but rather I want to put KDE-3.5.x on her PC. Having this liveCD means I am not forced in upgrading her CD reader/writer to a DVD reader/writer in order to install 3.5.x.

And if one wishes to play with a 4.1 LiveDVD one can go here:
“KDE Four Live” CD](http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/)
and I think ( not sure ) that was packaged by user Beineri , and if so, I owe him a lot of thanks because I have been playing with it a lot.

I’m bad.

That should read liveCD!

… and while we are on the subject of liveCDs, I wonder if anyone can shed some light on these factory liveCDs?
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/FactoryLiveCDs/

are these just a snapshot of the current state of the “unstable” factory versions of gnome and kde4.1.x ? … or is there some other history here?

Rushman -

I have a question for you. Is your system (with the KDE problems)
a laptop or a desktop? [If a laptop, please state the exact model.]

I’m the “he”. Yep, I meant you can switch back and forth. In YaST Software Management filter on Patterns and you will see the two you need, KDE3 Base and KDE3 Desktop. That won’t pull in every single KDE3 app, but you can get those by filtering on Groups or using the Search. This should add a selection to your KDM login menu (you need to change KDM to not automatically log you in, if its doing that); you’ll have one for KDE3 and one for KDE4. KDM always remembers your last choice, so you don’t have to select at login unless you’re switching. I’ve got this setup and it works great. Just be a bit careful in choosing the apps from the menu; there will be both KDE3 and KDE4 versions of many.

As far as why KDE 4.1 is released and then later breaks, it’s because you’ve continued to do updates, yes? That repository that provided 4.1 is Factory, and there is on-going development to those packages. I’ve been updating right along, but I’m betting that the update improvements outweigh the possible bugs introduced - I also like to be beat in the head with a stick every Saturday night, so mine is not a good example. Another thing about those Factory updates - you can’t easily go back. Everything is not necessarily synchronized past the official 4.1 release point.

Hope that helps.
