Suse 10.2 using tar.tz as backup

Hi

I have just noticed that a change has happened somewhere - I used to be able to backup .kde using tar.tz then take the file to my lap top, expand it and replace .kde thus getting my laptop up to date. *

Now .kde will tar.tz on this machine and expand with no problems but will not be copied from this machine [either dvd or usb stick]? I think it is about permissions but the file copies 99% then hangs. I have looked at my monthly backups and the tar file worked till around the beggining of this year - I suspect a security update has upset my plans? When expanding on the laptop a number of errors now occur making the .kde file useless

Any ideas?

Thanks

Why on earth are you backing up your entire .kde subdir to use on another
machine? That would really only work if both machines were identical
clones of each other. (and then… maybe)

KDE creates many symlinks to machine dependent locations, many based on the
hostname of the machine. Are the two machines named identically?

Can you not allow the laptop to update ‘normally’? Does this laptop have
internet connection?

Hi

No you are wrong. The .kde will take across up to date versions of Kontact and all the emails and contacts and calender. The lap top has access to internet but this is an issue of data and yes it has worked for 4 years and the two machines are not the same but use 10.2. and I do use the same user name obviously.

I have found a workaround - which allows both machines to be at the same point data wise. Hidden folder .kde contains two files share and autostart and if these are copied to a new folder, then compressed, the resultant .tar.gz [213Mbit] can be loaded on a memory stick and then uncompressed on the laptop. The two files can then be replaced in the hidden file .kde and all is up to date. We are not talking about software updates its data and passwords etc used within kde.

Thanks*

Kontact information can be exported and imported safely, there’s no need to
copy the entire .kde tree around. It’s more work, not as easy as just
tarring the tree, although a script could handle it quite simply.

Still not something I’d ever recommend doing. Sharing config trees
between systems isn’t trivial. But it seems to be working for you. That’s
good. I’ve used these linux contraptions for a few months… and based on
what I know I wouldn’t do that.

But of course, this is my opinion. Not that I really know anything or not.

It’s working for you. Good. Enjoy.

Loni.
