So I was installing OpenSuse via Memory stick because I have an HP mini 1000.
Anyway I finally got it on and ran the installer. Everything working great (besides mouse not working). Suddenly at 92% BOOM grub wont install.
I already formatted my drive so I was going through each option to just install grub. All failed. I said OK anyway.
Suprise suprise, nothing is booting. It says “no operating system found”
I tryed to install Grub via Ubuntu, it didnt really seem to work (or I did it wrong)
Now I am downloading OpenSuse live CD, will the live CD help me at all?
You can just use that to re-do the install. That’s what I would do. But run the media check from the cd menu first.
So OpenSuse live cd WILL help me reinstall it? Because iv hit a road block, it will take forever to get Windows back on because HP was too cheap to include a usb drive version of XP.
Duh! Sorry. HP mini has no cd drive right?
Correct. So I am downloading the live cd on my Ubuntu desktop. Then using the USB start up disk creator, I will create the usb start up disk using the live cd ISO
EDIT: Times like these I wish I had a USB dvd drive.
Installing on PS3: 2 hours, only 10 minutes of input
Installing on Desktop: 30 minutes, 5 minutes of input
Installing on HP Mini 1000: On the 4th day.
If you think the system installed you could try this
HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won’t Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive
Try actually booting the system with supergrub. If it fails I would say try installing again.
Thing is, was there no indication as to why grub failed. Were you using grub to MBR in the setup? What about other partitions / OS’s?
I formatted the drive again, so I can’t use supergrub. There was no indication other than it cannot be installed.
There were no other partitions, nor other OS’s it was a clean format.
I formatted it to EXT4 and it is an SSD
Hang on, what version of suse are you using
11.1 must be ext3
And I would make sure grub is to MBR!
I am using 11.2, since EXT4 is much kinder on SSD’s then ext3 (journled)
Oh and where does it give the option for Grub to MBR?
In the Install summary click on Booting
go to the Bootloader Installation Tab and set like this

You know of course 11.2 is a development version, there are still lots of bugs to ironed out of it. Release is not until November!
So how would I install opensuse from the live CD.
Here is my setup
HP MINI 1000
-8 gb SD card, contains the files of the full opensuse CD
-2 gb usb stick, contains the live CD
I thought you were using the usb stick already? Why not try it again and just create partitions like this:
swap
/
/home
set grub to MBR
see how you get on.
Did you read this
SuSE install from USB drive - openSUSE
or have you considered
INSTALL Internet - openSUSE
No I am in the process of making the stick into a bootable live CD so I can try to reinstall opensuse.
I am using the guide you sent me
OK. Take your time and go thru it methodically. I can’t say I have used those directions, I just wish I could splash out on a mini to indulge my fiddling instincts.
Once I get the live CD going, then what do I do, how do I install opensuse from there?
When you get to the live desktop there will be a Icon ‘Install’
Installation/11.1 Live CD - openSUSE
I am very very confused on the actual making it bootable part. Where do I type these codes:
* to make media for x86 (i386) the command is:
./mksusebootdisk --32 --partition /dev/sdb1 /mnt/dvd
I’m equally confused. As I read it it talks about dvd but in the very first part there is a link to a start cd: INSTALL Internet - openSUSE
Which seems to be a type of net install option. But it looks like it will exclude 11.2.
Have you tried unetbootin?
Some have had problems getting a suse .iso to work, yet other seem to have been ok.
UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads
I guess you could set this up from your Ub* machine. I have a usb pen drive with knoppix on which was done with unetbootin. Works excellently. There are .iso’s in the unetbootin options or you can choose to use your own, but it might not work.
The only other thing I can suggest is to go back to where you were, as it seemed to have almost made it, just grub was the problem. Investigate as I said grub to MBR and if that fails try supergrub to see if it will boot the sys and then try setting grub from there.
