I have several OK 12.3 x64 machines running, and suddenly on one of them, 100% of a single core is being used by something called kipmi0 - I’ve been searching the web and it’s sort of obscure. I’ve tried forcibly killing it, and it instantly reappears. Why on this machine? Is it related to some BIOS setting? I didn’t find any references on this forum either… Does anyone have more information that might help me recover that CPU time?
Not knowing what your entire setup is like, the ipmi is most likely used for system monitoring and completely removing it might not be… wanted. You can try to stop it with /etc/init.d/ipmi (if they use that init script on that machine) and you might be able to use the same trick as they did for old SLES and RHEL: http://www.novell.com/support/kb/doc.php?id=7003352
It’ll slow down IPMI performance by a factor of ten but might fix the issue.
Hi Miuku: Hmmm… I’ve never seen ipmi doing this before. I have vanilla 12.3x64 on a SuperMicro opteron system. I wonder if a BIOS setting is triggering it. I remember having to deal with something similar with tracker-store on 12.x Opensuse, but not ipmi…
Actually, I have four or five “vanilla” OS 12.3x64 systems, two are Opterons, two are PhenomII Blacks, and one is an i5 laptop. Only one system has this 100% CPU usage thing going, and it’s the biggest Opteron system… Is there any way to diagnose? The system needs a new MOBO and I’ll be shipping it out in a day or two - that might have something to do with it and I think developers might want to know…
