last week we updated my laptop (Medion Akoya MD 96970 from autumn 2008) from Suse 11.0 to Suse 11.3. After some initial trouble (black screen since the driver wasn’t correctly named in Suse 11.3) everything worked well for 1 week.
Then, when I switched on my laptop this morning, nothing happend — the screen stayed black, no boot noise, no reaction at all. I tried several times, with and without battery.
My laptop had worked perfectly last night, there were no symptoms like strange noises, burning stench or gradual data loss.
Did my two-and-a-half year old laptop just die a sudden death or might it be related to the update last week? Does somebody have an idea?

It’s highly unlikely that a software update affected the hardware so
severely.
I’d say it’s coincidence. As it happens, my stepson’s laptop (running
Windows) also recently died even though it showed no outward signs of a
problem until it croaked. It happens (looks like a mobo problem in his
case).

Oh, so sorry to hear of your (laptop) loss. A dead Laptop in such a short time is terrible news to happen to you. I would never say never to anything I heard, but really never heard of an OS taking out hardware before. My typical answer is that everything works fine until it stops working and it is unknown what you might be doing or had just done when it goes out.
Now you need to check with technical support for your brand laptop as all may not be lost just yet. On two different occasions, apparently dead laptops were revived with tiny details tech support knew about that no one else knows. I even had one myself that would lite up, then turn right back off. In my case, I pulled the hard drive and low and behold it fired up and gave a hard drive error, which had went bad. So, don’t despair, but do get professional help.
Hi sonja, our thoughts are with you at this sad time of loss. When my desktop pc running MS Windows retired, it did so silently, suddenly, and without unpleasant odours. I replaced the motherboard, processor, and power supply, at less cost than a new one. However that’s more difficult, and more expensive to do with a laptop.
In your particular case, I doubt that openSUSE instructed your laptop to self-destruct (aka technicide). Two and and a half years is indeed a short life, but your laptop’s pedigree is not so well known (to me at least). My own laptop (a well-known brand) has just exited the 1-year guarantee period, so we are now taking it “one day at a time”. Right now, you are one and a half years ahead of me…
That leaves you with the advice from @jdmcdaniel3 as the first step. As to subsequent repair, watch the cost, as replacements are cheaper now than two and a half years ago.
S.L/T.D is not so very uncommon, MBO’s, and daughter boards may become unseated as can memory or fail unexpectedly. Consider 1) checking memory and daughter boards are well seated. 2) Have the unit checked at a repair shop 3) remove the hdd drive and pickup a 2.5 inch IDE to 3.5 inch standard IDE adapter so you can connect the drive to a regular PC IDE cable for data extract/recovery, 4) Same as 3) except pickup an IDE external enclosure to make an external drive out of the old one.

“with and without battery” - did you physically remove the battery? My
wife’s Toshiba hibernated just fine one night then refused to come out of
it’s coma the next morning - no lights, nothing. Plugged in the external
power - still nothing. On a hunch (2.5 years life from a battery that is
used frequently is approaching the MTBF) I pulled the battery. The machine
came right up on external power as well as with another known good battery.
The battery had failed such that it discharged itself and was too much load
for the power supply/charging circuitry.

sure sounds like hardware failure…
but, the hardware might be as simple as one open circuit (are you
absolutely certain the power cord and wall socket is ok–yes i know
you said you tried it with battery: but are you absolutely certain the
battery was charged)…
on the other hand, if your machine is in warranty i’d run to the
service counter…
and, depending on geek and laptops costs in your area you might find a
repair either FAR too expensive or very reasonable (compared to a
new machine)
good luck (i bet you are glad to have a backup of all important data,
photos, music, letters, etc!)

Be it ever so humble, there is no place like 127.0.0.1.

thanks for saying, and please keep us informed!!

I updated from 11.2 to 11.3 everything seems to be working fine and still does but only for a short period of time and then the system freez / hangs…
I noticed couple of things and try to create the same scenario to see if it hangs again and it did. When you plug back the power while playing music or watching movie and when you try to use different applications. Plugging power adapter back in and out seems to be the trouble maker…
One more thing, when you hit any key while screen saver is running system goes in non-responding mode.

-=welcome=- new poster… BUT, do not stick your problems down at the
bottom of someone elses…
begin a new thread for EACH individual problem you have…each thread
should be in the correct forum and have a descriptive
title…sticking your “system freeze” or non-responding while screen
saver is running problems under “Sudden laptop death after Suse 11.3
update” is NOT gonna get the folks you want to look at your problem to
do so…
