Substantial slowdown with Nvidia 177.82 Drivers on PNY 8500G

Hi everyone, first post here.

I’m running OpenSuSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1 (installed from LiveCD) on my main system (in signature). I have tried 3 times to successfully install the non-free nvidia drivers for my gpu (PNY GeForce 8500GT 512MB) and have each time gotten a horrid slowdown in KDE (yet not in the Gnome desktop). The lag is in equal amounts with and without desktop effects.

I am currently trying to install the Nvidia beta drivers (180.06) since I’ve seen much praise over them in my days of google searches. I can’t figure out how to get the system to not start X at boot up without messing up my xorg.conf intentionally so the xserver does not load.

If there is a fix for the current “stable”:sarcastic: drivers that I’m running that someone has, please do tell. But if someone knows how to stop X from inside KDE, that might help too. :\

:X Pardon me for my lack of knowledge of Slackware based Linux distributions, I mostly use CentOS 4 and Debian etch as my main distributions.
