Sub-pixel hinting settings having no effect

Hello, finally got round to installing my copy of openSUSE 11.1 today.
Been very smooth sailing for the most part.

Just one minor problem; Sub-pixel hinting works but changing the
settings between slight/medium/full doesn’t seem to have any effect.
I’m not sure exactly which setting it’s stuck on but it not medium which
would be by preference. Currently the fonts are a little too sharp for
my tastes so I’d guess it’s set to full.

Currently using KDE 4.2 from the factory repos. I recall someone else
mentioning a similar problem, sadly I’ve so far failed to find it with
the search function.

Not mean to bump by post but I’ve just thought it might be handy to
mentioned that I’m using the latest stable nvidia graphics driver
(180.22).

I’m not sure it this has any bearing on font rendering.

I was using KDE 4.2 RC on my old installation, sub-pixel hinting worked
as you would expect.

Fairly basic information that really should have been in the first post
