su verses su - the thread I can't find

Hi, there is a lengthy but intelligent conversation on the su verses su - subject in a thread I can no longer find, I would like to locate this thread, but have not yet had any success, If someone could help in locating the thread it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps this is the one you were thinking of?

su or su - ???

I found it using this:

openSUSE Search

Thank You,

Perhaps this is the one you were thinking of?

su or su - ???

Thanks, this is not the one I was looking for, although it does contain relevant info.
The thread I’m looking for is considerably longer with a more detailed conversation about the pros and cons of each of those options (at least that’s how I remember it) .
I can’t recall anything about how the thread was named.

Hi
Maybe this one in the howtos?
Become su in Terminal - HowTo

Become su in Terminal - HowTo

Yep, that’s the one!
With a title like that, even I’m trying to understand why I couldn’t find it!!
Thanks.

Rather than wade through that thread, the use of su, su -, su-c <command> is nicely laid out here:
The su Command

hmmmmmm…yours is one opinon, here is another:

your cite, while wonderful, requires the reader to “wade though” half of
that page before you finally get to

Thus, administrators should generally use su as follows:

su -

whereas in this forums how-tp <http://tinyurl.com/yhb3wco> you get to
that important fact in the first line!!

you do not need to “wade through that thread” to learn how to do it the
correct way…you need only read the FIRST post of that how-to…

therefore, Carl’s how-to is far superior to the one at linfo for the
purpose of instructing how to “Become su in Terminal”…

then the background of all the other uses of su offered by linfo is
wonderful…

It was just a suggestion, those who wanted to understand why ‘su -’ is better than ‘su’ alone and in what circs may have found it useful, if you didn’t there was no compulsion to read, and no need to protest.
