stupid project? KDE 3.5 on OS 11.3 or 11.4

Hi,

since some days I have an idea in my mind, which is maybe stupid. Or not…

The first Linux distro I tried in my life was Open Suse 10.1 with KDE 3. I did not succeed with it, but anyway: some days ago I thought “would be cool to have this feeling and this desktop again, somehow”.

Then I read in some threads and so on that there are some people who have a current version of opensuse running, with KDE 3.5.

I have an old Laptop over here which I could use for that. It is lying around anyway, so why not trying to install OpenSuse with KDE 3.5

So when I now install 11.3 and add the KDe 3.5.10 repo, can I then replace KDE 4 with KDE 3.5 or do I need to install the system without graphic userinterface and install KDE 3.5 on top of it?

the combination from current system with all the drivers and so on and the old desktop would be cool somehow…

Or is this whole idea complete bulls**t? All this does not have any necessarity behind it, just for remembering how it was at this time…

which opinions and facts do you have regarding this?

This is a hot topic with an elite but small minority of die hard kde3 users.

IMO it’s a complete waste of time and pure nostalgia.

Add the repo, install the pattern (assuming it presents the pattern in software manager, I can’t be sure)
At login, choose your session kde3
You might want to switch the display and window manager in /etc/Sysconig, but it’s not essential.

Well, there may be reasons to have KDE 3.x
One is, for the software that is written for KDE3. If i check on KDE Apps there are a lot of software that just run only with KDE3.
Klibido is one of them.
So there might be good reason to have KDE3.
Personally, it doesn’t make sense to me really. But there is also a revival project for KDE3. So instead of installing just the original KDE there is the other choice, which may be maintained.
Trinity Desktop Environment

IMO it’s a complete waste of time and pure nostalgia.

yeah thats right

I don´t have real reasons for that. Its just some playing around. But maybe I´ll leave it anyway, because it really doesn´t make sense.

but according to this Trinity page, they are currently working on a opensuse repo… maybe I´ll try it then

thank you for your answers!

your welcome

I did it anyway. Conclusion: the progress made with KDE 4 is incredible. And you are right, caf4926, its not worth it anymore.

Sometimes it’s OK to have a trip down memory lane
But you can’t go back that far and expect to feel the same about it today as you did back then

In that case you’ll have to wait for a long time. Trinity is currently being ported to cmake, and it has little other improvements so far. I sugest you to just install conventional KDE3. You can find the instructions here: KDE3 - openSUSE

I also recommend using 11.3 rather than 11.4 because some users reported problems with kcontrol when using 11.4.

I don’t use KDE3, and actually I’m KDE4 developer, but I have respect for people thanks to whom it’s possible to use KDE3 in openSUSE.

Keep’em coming

Not at all.

I depend on at least two KDE3 applications that have not been ported to
KDE4 yet: rekall and kbabel. And my work as contributor to Linux depends on
me being able to use kbabel.

Rekall hasn’t a successor or equivalent. Kbabel does, Lokalize - which is
not still finished and lacks what for me are most have features that kbabel
had.

I don’t care about kde3 or kde4, as in fact what I use is Gnome. But I do
need certain apps, and some have not been ported.

Long live kde 3 series. I fell in love with kde 2, then 3 improved, now kde 4 is such I nightmare that I actually use thunar and other non kde progs hoping they are as cool fast and friendly as those pre kde 4 days…

I have even contemplated using windows again after a decade of not having as primary os. so incredibly sad.

In that case why not to use KDE3 if you love it?

P.S. The reported problems with 11.4 have been already solved.

LXDE, GNOME and XFCE are also great alternatives

Of course there is a ton of other DEs to choose from.

Best regards,
Greg

I’ve been with SuSE since v 5.0 (previously working for a few years with Slackware)

You question touch a very serious problem for KDE 4.x and SuSE above 11.1.

KDE 4,4 is a very nice desktop environment but so far id doesn’t have the same ergonomic like original KDE until 3.5.
It make KDE 4.4 unworkable in real demanding working environment.

So I keep KDE 4.x as a toy but for every day work I use KDE 3.5 due to ergonomic, much better functionality such as fas adjustment
navigation and so on. Unfortunately SuSE drop support for KDE3.5 on SuSE 11.1 level so it is ironic.

I have a lot of respect for KDE team but, this time they want for spectacular look and feel dropping the most important
aspect which had been build for the years the strength of KDE. In my opinion lack of solid foundation like KDE until 3.5
make new KDE 4.4 nice toy with bunch of nice application and icons ( like Mac stuff) and is far, far behind functionality in
KDE legacy. It is a sad but theu start from upside down building first graphic and after feel in ergonomic, navigation and
functionality. (Looks like microsoftish way )

I strongly believe that some years ahead KDE 4.x and plus will get closer to ergonomic, and flexibility to setup environment
to particular work even a few times a day) like in legacy KDEs. Thus until then we need KDE 3.5 for every day work)

Pleas do not take me wrong I have installation 11.4 with KDE 4.4 and I really enjoyed but just for fun It is very hard to work
efficiently with 4.4 so I have 11.1 with KDE 3.5 for my every day of work.
I also start to looking for a new efficient environment for my work.

Well, your question is a very important for peapole involved releasind SuSE distributions and as well for KDE team
working so hard to bring us the best solution in the industry.

Sorry for a stupid question, but why you do not use KDE3 on 11.4 if you liket it so much?

It is simple like this I do not have time and desire make upgrade 11.4 and KD3.5 So I keep my old environment as a working one.
And testing 11.4 KDE 4.4 after big disappointment as a fun one. I just want to avid possible problems bringing KDE 3.5 to 11.4
(lack of time to play with it - You know after years with computers if can stay out of computers I try to be as far as I can)

But thanks for the point, I really appreciate it.

Maybe some day, probably when 11.1 wont be supported any more, I will do so.
Well it will be really nice to have kde 4.x with all this ergonomic.

how did you do that? i ask because openSUSE 11.4 is born with KDE 4.6.0

and, it is stable, fast and easy to learn and use…

openSUSE 11.1 past its end of life on January 14th 2011 and has not been
supported since; cite: http://en.opensuse.org/Lifetime

there is, however a limited life extension project called Evergreen,

That day is past, for almost a year

I do have 11.4 with both kde 3 and 4, by the way.

my question at the beginning of this thread was just some kind of “nostalgic” - don´t know how to say to that. I was just thinking about how it was, as I had the first contact with Linux, because KDE 3.5 was the first I tried. So I just wanted a “look back”. That´s what I did and I realised that I for one (my opinion, my point of view) could not work with KDE 3.5 and I am a KDE 4 guy.
I also failed at my first trial of Linux back then, with Suse 10.1 - and I am not really sure if this was because of KDE at this time.
