I’m running openSUSE 13.2 gnome and out of curiosity, I decided to try icewm3, which was installed by default. Now I can’t seem to get back to a login screen so as to go back to gnome. I found the logout button, but it doesn’t do anything. Not sure that it matters, but I have a multiboot grub setup on this laptop, and the operating grub is that of openSUSE.
Clicking on the “logout button” works fine here.
But try to press and hold the mouse button for a few seconds and you should get a submenu. Make sure “Logout” is selected there, not Restart or Shutdown as those do not work.
If all else fails, you could also press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace twice to kill the current session and return to the login screen.

No, that doesn’t matter.
In my IceWM “MInimal X” test this morning, clicking “logout” worked, but then the various options after that didn’t work.
Ended up just powering off and restarting.
IMO IceWM for now may be useful as an emergency Desktop, but should be avoided for general use.

What “various options” do you mean?
As I wrote before, restart or reboot does not work in IceWM, yes.
But after logging out, all DM options should work, they do here.

If you did a “minimal X” install you probably are using xdm, and that one doesn’t have much options, true.
But that’s unrelated to IceWM…

IceWM is fully usable, in 13.2 at least, and any other release before.
In my experience at least.
What openSUSE release did you try anyway?
I haven’t tried it recently. But you can probably use:
CTRL-ALT-F!
CTRL-ALT-DEL (maybe twice)
to reboot.
Or CTRL-ALT-F1, then login as root and shutdown from the command line.
In my opinion, Icewm is very usable. You can start lots of applications at the command line (and there is a menu of sorts, too). If you are not comfortable with the command line, then you wouldn’t have installed minimal X.

Yes. However, if minimal X was installed, then there isn’t any different desktop to choose and the login manager is XDM which does not have a selection menu.
the OP said he had gnome3 and presumably gdm, he tried icewm and couldn’t logout, for him the simplest thing to do is press ctrl+alt+2xbackspace, that will kill icewm and bring up gdm from where he can chose gnome again.
