SYS INFO: SuSE 10.3 (normally with) KDE 3.5-something
PROBLEM: when i booted up (without stopping for a password sign in screen) this morning it booted directly into fvvm…i want to get back to KDE but can find no fvvm menu which allows me to start a new session, or shutdown X and restart it with KDE…(like is available in KDE with Desktop right click > “Start new session” or something like that…maybe Desktop > Log out > start new session…don’t recall)
QUESTION: Anyone know
-
the magic menu path in fvvm to shut down that session (in fvvm) and start up a new X session using KDE? OR
-
the one (or several) config files whose editing will cause KDE to be the DEFAULT window manager (rather than fvvm, as it is now)?
-
or any other way to get OUT of fvvm (forever) and have my box boot automatically to KDE (as Buddha intended it:)??
BACKGROUND: trying to help someone here i discovered that (unlike my previous 10.2) when i right clicked on the desktop picked “Log out” and then “Change User” the screen just went black, and it would NEVER offer the chance to pick another user…it just hung solid…no key combo did anything (not ctrl+alt+backspace, not ctrl+alt+F1, NOTHING)…
only way out (as far as i could find) was the hardware power reset button…
next time i tried (instead of “Change User”) “Change Session” or “Start new session” or something like that…when i did i happy to see the usual log in screen…i put in my log in info…and then remembered that earlier in the day i’d seen a question by a gnome user and had wondered if i’d loaded gnome during my last install (10.2 up to 10.3 a few weeks back)…and, saw that “Sessions” link on the sing in page, clicked it…saw that gnome wasn’t listed but fvvm was, and decided to have a look at it…so clicked on it…
up popped a note that the session in ctrl+alt+F7 would remain and fvvm would launch in ctrl+alt+F1…i took a short look at fvvm (yikes!) and when i’d had enough i shut down the fvvm session and used ctrl+alt+F7 to get back into my still running KDE…
HOURS later i decided to sleep for the night, and shut down as usual …oh man, when i boot today it is remembering i last logged in to a fvvm session…and, here i am: LOST in fvvm land and can’t get out!
i tried the fvvm menu and can’t find a way to start a new session (which i’d have hoped would take me to the sign in screen again, where i could click on “Session” in the lower left corner again)
i did find “Exit” which immediately dumped me at that solid black screen of death, where NOTHING works…and a hardware reset button push results in another boot to fvvm…
if someone knows the file(s) and what has to be changed to make KDE the default windows manager again, i can (easily) make those changes as root and be forever grateful…
HELP me please…there is no water and i can hear the natives in the bushes…
