Streaming with Rhythmbox

Hi,

Is it possible to get Rhythmbox to play the audio from this stream source?

In case this helps

Ok, I’ve switched to banshee to manage my music, but it won’t play the stream either. So if anyone has any ideas on how to get banshee to stream it?

Basically I just want to try and stream it in some other software that doesn’t use the mplayer plugin.

I listen to this radio station a fair bit and firefox with the mplayer plugin has problems if I go on to another site that has audio. Unfortunately firefox with the mplayer plugin is the only way I’ve found so far that plays the stream.

I managed it with exaile and it wasn’t till I used bad plugins it would play though I’m a couple of versions ahead, perhaps that’ll help.

Hi FeatherMonkey,

Thanks for your help.

I’ve made some progress. I installed exaile and couldn’t get it to play via the http source, but when I tried it exposed this protocol, rtsp://66.70.119.243/2mmm which plays in all 3 media players (exaile, banshee and rhythmbox) but very stunted as it’s not buffering.
When you say “I used bad plugins” I assume you mean gstreamer. How/where do you the get later versions?

If anyone knows how to make banshee buffer the source rtsp://66.70.119.243/2mmm please feel free to share

Yeah sorry I did notice that with the url. As you say stuttering and I’ve not touched my buffer setting and I’m also UK based I’m inclined to think its a network problem. First thing that comes to mind is ipv6 so if you haven’t disable.

Then if it is a case of newer vs older then packman has it, do you not have the packman repo enabled? Webpin I would use the packman IMO as adding one of the others may also bring other stuff and with repos I stick to less is less hassle and packman is a recommended.

I disabled ipv6 yesterday as it was causing a different error. I already had the packman repo setup, but have just realised when you select an installed package, it offers an upgrade if available, thanks for the pointer. I’m learning more every day
Unfortunately I can’t upgrade it at the moment as it requires some other stuff from the opensuse repo’s and they appear to be down at the moment. :frowning: Once they’re available, I’ll upgrade the gstreamer-plugins and post back the result.

I’ve updated the gstreamer packages and both rhythmbox and exaile are streaming it well.
Banshee no longer shows an error and says its connecting but then gets no further. :frowning:
Looks like it’s back to rhythmbox.

Anyway, it’s sorted some of the issues I was having streaming the radio and surfing the net at the same time.

Thanks for your help FeatherMonkey.

NP glad you solved it didn’t expect that though. I’ll be remembering that one

Might want to an update all if newer. May bring some other newer bits from Packman. zypper up from the cli might do it I can’t really remember all the differences between the applet, yast sw, and zypper any more.

Not sure about banshee and as I avoid gnome like the plague not really interested in trying. I just happened to have exaile installed which I knew used the gstreamer backend.

I have been having problems with playing radio streams as well. It complains about streaming mpeg, suggests to download the “bad” codecs then fails to resolve it. Manually switching things around doesn’t seem to help either.

I just reinstalled 11.4 on my netbook since 12.1 was nothing but a long series of expletives. 12.1 never showed this problem.
