Strange things

When i installed for the first time my opensuse 11 i don’t select some application like tomboy and in the first start i have a nice error message because tomboy couldn’t be found … It’s very strange …

Second to install inkscape there is skencil dependancie but inkscape doesn’t require skencil … Strange too …

Third i know it’s a bad idea but i decide to remove the root password with passwd -d root … and after i can’t relaunch yast or administrative tool…

Is one person could explain to a small french guy all of this ?

Stéphane from France

I do not know how other people do it , I just start with the basic
install .
Afterwards I install the programs I like to have.
Even weeks or months after the install you can add or remove software.
If you started with error message it is likely that install
was not totally a success
If you remove root password than you can not do anything any more
that is normally doen by root
Before installing did you checkk the Mdchecksum and run a media check ?
If the media check is not good do not use it as a install media

dobby9

The media check is good …
But the error for tomboy is that the tomboy applet is active by default …
The dep problem with inkscape is other … It’s a packaging problem… Inkscape doesn’t require skencil…
And for the root password it’s not a good idea to deactivate it but if this is a standalone PC it’s not very usefull…

It was simple remarks of a new user of OpenSUSE

Stéphane

Even a standalone Pc needs a root password.
If you like to update or install or un install you need a root password anyhow in opensuse
There are Linux distros if you only like update it ask for the users password and even there distro which allow you to update without a password.
But installing is a other story
It is a safety matter that you need root privilege to do certain things
Take for instance installing if you do not need a root password to do so,while you are on the internet everybody can install things on you,re computer think for instance of rootkits

For sure … but it’s not normal that passwd -d root is enable and “crash” the normal functions … I hate thos strange things

No, to execute that command, you MUST be root.

You are generally protected from doing absurdly ‘stupid things’ when you’re a user.

When you’re root… there are NO checks on your powers. This is not windows,
and OpenSUSE is not Ubuntu.

Granted… this is also how we learn.

The installer installs a preselected list of software. If you don’t like it,
uninstall it. If want it and it’s not installed, install it. Pretty Simple.

In the case of Inkscape “requiring skencil”… are you sure? Maybe it IS a
packaging problem… but the author/packager of Inkscape seems to desire you
to also have skencil installed too.

The list of dependencies for Inkscape is:

libc.so.6
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.4)
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1.3)

libpoppler.so.3
skencil <<<<<=====================================
libgcc_s.so.1(GCC_3.3.1)

rpmlib(PayloadIsLzma) <= 4.4.2-1
rpmlib(VersionedDependencies) <= 3.0.3-1
rpmlib(PartialHardlinkSets) <= 4.0.4-1

Which does indicate that, for whatever reason, Inkscape DOES require skencil
to be installed. No, I don’t know why.

The computer’s just following instructions.

If it’s not a good idea to do something… maybe not doing it is a good idea?

You’ll need some knowledge and a rescue disk to fix root’s password.

With that one command, you made it such that you cannot EVER log in as
root… so unless you have previously set up certain privileges involving
your user and ‘sudo’… you will be unable to perform any sort of system
maintenance and setup since you now cannot type root’s password to use the
‘sudo’ command. (Ubuntu does this to “help” ween Windows users. OpenSUSE is
not Ubuntu)

For tomboy it’s not normal …
Try a fresh install without selecting tomboy from the install list then when the first boot ended you will have an error message …

There is another problem with my printer HP PSC2355 … by default it’s hpijs-standalone which is installed and the scanner doesn’t work, i must remove and install hplip to work … why use hpijs and not the hplip ?

Sorry for my remarks i’m new on suse … and i just discover this great distro…

Stéphane

I refuse to believe that tomboy is on by default
I do not use it , but I check it.
And about the driver you have to change it , was it so difficult to do so.
dobby9

No but in my professionnal work i work for a school and think about deploy linux and learn use it and install to teacher and student … For this reason i have test many distro and suse which i prefer for the moment … And i think for a low level user it’s too hard to understand …

Sorry maybe not clear … I’m frenchy …

Well if you put it that way I am 70 years old now
When my children were young the computer become popular and I told one thing .
From now on you have two choices :

  1. You become a master of the computer
  2. You become his slave
    The choice is you,res
As as you know learning is not down in one day
And if somebody ask me how can I learn LInux than my
answer will be what do you like the easy way or the hard way and opensuse is surely not the most difficult way.
Why not because 90% can be done using a GUI , but knowing the most used Linux commands is very help full and if good installed stable as a rock
When I start using Linux the only GUI we have was the Midnight Commander
