Strange kmail problem

After a year or more of having kmail crash several times during a mail
reading session I finally have a program in 12.2 which appears to be
stable.

However, it refuses to download all mail. I am able to access mail in
several ways using: a Blackberry playbook; Thunderbird; a web browser by
accessing my internet provider’s website. Only kmail is set up to delete
messages on the server.

When I start my computer in the morning, kmail downloads mail received
overnight. Afterwards, it will not download mail. A possible reason is
that the playbook may have downloaded new messages between the two attempts
at downloading by kmail but I don’t know for sure. When I go to the
server’s website I find that the mail downloaded by the playbook is still
there in the inbox and is still marked as unread. I can fire up Thunderbird
and retrieve the messages that the playbook downloaded. Only kmail refuses
to download these messages.

Is this a feature of kmail or a bug?

I am about ready to give up on kmail except for two things: I read somewhere
that development of Thunderbird will cease in the not too distant future; I
don’t know of any EASY way to transfer messages from kmail to another email
program.

Suggestions anyone?

kmail (and maybe kmail2, which does twisted thing with akonadi for no good
reason) use pretty bog standard *nix ways of storing email (mbox or
maildir i think). Many other clients can read these. Though many are cli
or ncurses (no html).
