Strange KDE: broken Kwrite

Just a comment really: I dupped Tw this morning and then Kwrite didn’t work so I reverted the kwrite version to openSUSE 13.1 version and it worked again.

I’d forgotten about all the quirky behaviour Tw generates.

Regards
John

Is the quirkyness repeatable by reverting kwrite to its previous source?

I did “zypper dup” a few minutes ago.

Then I tried “kwrite”. I think it is working. But since it is showing the text as black letters on a black background, I really can’t tell >:(

As long as vi/vim isn’t broken, I’ll get by.

Some priorities are just not as “equal” as others.

Hint noted. But reverting to a broken Gnome doesn’t see like a good idea either.

I guess I should test out “kwrite” in my factory test install.

That Gnome stuff breaks, but only momentarily. Yesterday it broke here on a zypper dup that didn’t include an actual kernel upgrade. I immediately ran a second “zypper -v dup” and the nine packages reverted to 3.12 support.

hi John,

observation

after some updates kwrite will not start

no problem found after rebooting
but this has always been the case, independent of versions of sw

sometimes kwrite will not start if logged on as root until cmd sequence is run
(cmd appears in window on kwrite start failure)

Kernel: 3.15.0-1.g9194b64-desktop x86_64
Desktop: KDE 4.13.2
Distro: openSUSE 13.1 (Bottle) (from current update repo)

Yes, you should always reboot or logout/login (i.e. restart KDE) after upgrading KDE.
Otherwise stuff from the old version is still loaded which can lead to problems.

Regarding the “black on black” issue, this sounds like the one here:
http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/496710-Want-to-downgrade-from-KDE-4-12-on-OpenSuse-13-1-to-original-stock/page2
Unfortunately we haven’t found the cause or a solution there.

But it seems not to be related to Tumbleweed or the repo priorities, as this was about 13.1 and the KDE:Release:412 repo.

Did anyone try kate?

So on your advices I revised kwrite to Tw version, rebooted, all is well now.

BTW Carl, Kate is not ‘in’ by default, but it’s in both repos.

I know
Just I always add in my installs and it was an idea for you
