When I started my laptop in the evening two days ago on the train back home, I got this really strange GRUB boot menu background, sort of a Christmas-sy landscape with Tuxes skiing on the screen. After shutting off and rebooting, everything was back to normal, and I didn’t notice anything unusual with my SUSE installation.
(And no, I’m not abusing any illegal substances, nor any legal ones for that matter … )
Any one else experienced this? I shouldn’t suspect a virus/worm/etc., should I?
Meaning that’s some sort of e-egg? Are there more surprises hidden, and when do they usually pop up?
… Hm, I’m not really annoyed with it, but I’d still like to know what’s going on inside my laptop. Not to mention that it was late and I was tired when it happened, so I honestly thought I might be hallucinating …
The solution is pretty simple. GRUB in 11.1 is configured to show you the Christmas bootscreen randomly with an adjustable probability. If you wanna get rid of it, follow this comment by tom_enos and you’ll never see this bootscreen again openSUSE Christmas Greetings? - openSUSE Forums
Yeah… actually I find it funny to hear that some people start of thinking their LINUX-system would be virus infected when seing such a great bootloader.
I got used to it and its great to watch it awhile as it’s still snowing outside.
Here is the appropriate thing you should do, homoludens1000: Get yourself a hot cup of tea and a cookie.
