Hello,
I have a strange font problem where the numbers are missing until I highlight them on the page - see the screenshot below
It seems the numbers are showing up in white text on white background - but numbers only…
It only happens with some fonts and one some web pages with both Firefox and Chromium in the same way.
It looks like it’s also happening in the console window - see the white numbers in the screenshot.
This started after a failed update to 15.0 which I managed to recover from with the help of the forum.
I did a 15.0 to 15.1 online upgrade hoping that might fix it but it hasn’t.
- I’ve never changed any of the fonts from default settings anywhere.
The fonts problem happens in KDE and LXDE
Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?
Thanks

Things to try:
1-Create a new user to test the same pages.
2-Create (a) new browser profile(s) to test the same pages.
3-login to a different DE, e.g. IceWM instead of Plasma
4-switch themes, temporarily if you please
I cannot reproduce the problem using SeaMonkey on KDE3 and not using Breeze for anything.
Hello, yes it’s the same on IceWM and xfce
I had fun creating a new user as I hit the Parent directory is not a Btrfs volume bug
But fixed with update - don’t like that new fangled stuff
I remember when the default was Reiser! (now on ext4)
But anyway, yes with a new user the font problem is still exactly the same on the various windowing systems.
It is also happening with the default font in LXterminal (see screenshot) but not in Konsole terminal - both of which are set to Monospace I think (unchanged from default)
Thanks
I suppose this could be fallout from the 42.3 to 15.0 trouble you had. Was 42.3 originally a fresh install, or an upgrade from something older? If something older, what was this original installation?
First I’d try deleting ~/.cache/*, then running fc-cache with the force option(s). What I’d probably try next if no joy, is booting to multi-user, deleting the content of /etc/fonts/, then force reinstalling everything to do with fontconfig, followed by zypper ve. Maybe starting with zypper ve could find a problem to solve.
Hello, on this machine I’ve upgraded release by release from 13.something, all by DVD apart from when 15.0 upgrade failed and I was advised here to try an online update, which worked and sorted out most things. I then did an online update to 15.1 which worked but didn’t fix the font problem.
Verifying hasn’t thrown up any errors (apart from the libgcrypt thing which I’ve brought up in another thread and is I think unrelated as the fonts thing was happening back on 15.0)
Clearing the cache and running fc-cache -f hasn’t helped
conserv3tb:/home/asb # zypper ve
libgcrypt selftest: binary (0): Selftest failed (/usr/lib64/.libgcrypt.so.20.hmac)

Before I delete and reinstall /etc/fonts/ could you be a bit more specific as to what to reinstall - currently I have installed
fontconfig fontconfig-32bit and fontconfig-devel (but not fontconfig-devel-32bit)
Is that everything?
Many thanks
I don’t know all that might be required. I’d start with all packages shown as installed from the output of:
zypper se -s font | egrep -v 'fonts|tex'
Hello,
Reinstalling /etc/fonts/ as suggested has worked.
Fonts fixed.
Thanks so much!
