Strange behaviour from external usb optical drive

I have had some problem getting my external Samsung blu-ray drive to work on Opensuse 12.3.
First I had it connected through an usb extension cable (with led light if that should be important). Total length perhaps 1.5 meters.

Then I had a thought… try direct connecting to an USB port: abracadabra … it worked.

Using the extension cable: Just after I connected the device

Sounds like the extension is degrading the signal too much, and either
the cable needs to be replaced or you just need to not use the extension.
