strang in shutdown

hi

i am using OpenSUSE 11.1.till now its cool except.it is failing to shutting down.i use GNOME as my desktop.and user is root.when i am clicking on computer->shutdown its besically loging out.after that i need to shudown it by from menu. if i try init 0 on command prompt its shutting down the system.what to do?how to fix it?

Why do you run gnome as root? You should not.

When you boot, are you booting to runlevel 3 initially and then starting the graphical interface with startx? Or do you directly boot to runlevel 5?

its directly comming to GUI.a big login screen then i need to enter user name: root password : xxxxxx.

i have some other user ie. raj and oracle but i need to do some network related stuff i prefer to do it as root.but the problem is comming with shutdown as i said.don’t know what is the reason exactly…

I didn’t saw that you are using 11.1 and I don’t know is this can be the same problem, sorry. You must check bug reports of 11.1 if somebody have problem like that.

When you press shutdown, does it log out everytime or only sometimes?

When it log out, press ctrl+alt+f1 and check if it shutdown then.

Everytime.even as a root and as a raj (ie normal user).

When it log out, press ctrl+alt+f1 and check if it shutdown then.

its opening a black screen ie.TERMINAL.its logging out & asking for uid & password.and startx command is not working there.giving some error.

regards

So this looks like different problem than in 11.2

I think I had a similar problem of just logging out instead of shutting
down / restarting in openSUSE 11.1. I think, when it logged me out, I
logged back in and tried to shutdown again and it worked…

However it was a long time ago. I seem to remember others with a similar
problem, more recently maybe searching the forums, will help you to
solve the problem.

how to come over from there?
