I’m trying to install Suse 11.0 with a boot cd (network installation).
The cd boots fine but when the installer start scanning for linux partitions I get this error:
“The storage subsystem is locked by an unknown application. You must quit that application before you can continue.”
With abort, retry, ignore buttons.
it happens during network install for openSUSE 11.1
I am using tftpboot/pxe mechanism to start installation, i.e., no network install CD/DVD, as my computer does not have a floppy, CD/DVD drive
the error just happens after hardware-detection as you describe, but just before that, another dialogue is popping up asking whether to enable ‘usb-storage’ driver. Whether or not I choose to enable it, the ‘storage subsystem is locked’ error is encountered.
My machine is a rather old IBM X22 Thinkpad with 638MByte of RAM and I would like to use it as a ‘netbook’ as it s very light and compact.
Ubuntu 8.10 installs without a hitch and even detects and configures my wireless PCI card (Netgear WG511T) without fuss. Nevertheless, I’d like to use openSUSE (hoping wireless network card support has improved since version 11.0), as I got used to it over the years and generally like the powerful YaST2 system configuration tool.
I used pxelinux.0 file from syslinux package installed on my current desktop machine that runs openSUSE 11.0
I added vga=0x314 option to append string in ‘default’ file
I added install=http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/ option to append string in ‘default’ file. This seems to install the latest incarnation of openSUSE, i.e., 11.2 using the 11.1 YaST2 installer (Why? Because YaST2 installer says ‘openSUSE 11.1’ but installation media is labelled with ‘openSUSE 11.2-0’.
Note: By installing 11.2 there was another YaST2 error during installation which I have to investigate and report to Novell/openSUSE… But installation seems to run through ok so far despite that error…
Having had this exact problem with openSUSE 11.1, the only solution that worked for me was using the loader files that come with the media. That is the files “linux” and “initrd” from the folder /boot/[i386|x86_64]/loader/ of the media.
Using loader files from “http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/boot/[i386|x86_64]/loader/” together with openSUSE 11.1 repository halts installation at an earlier stage right after having loaded the first Installation System (of six) with the error message “Could not find the openSUSE repository. Activating the manual setup program.”
