Hi.
About a week ago, working with my laptop, suddenly, the screen turned black. I could here the music that was playing but, the system was unresponsive. I had to “hard-shutdown” the machine restarting it. I received a message:
The storage device ST1000LM0ET-1RK172 (<</dev/sda>>) is showing indications of instability.
What I did was to install “SMARTmontools”; run the program; but it tells me there are no errors.
Today it happened for the forth time and I have no idea where to look and how to repair it.
I hope you can help me on this one.
Thanks

In any case, I would make some extra backup.

I thank you for your answer. Do you know how to repair it?

This looks to me like a reason to contact Seagate support, unless the laptop was asleep at those times, and still it might anyway

It seems to be ok, is it?
I am worried about multiple occurrences of ‘KINGSTON DataTraveler SE1 1.00 PQ’ in your journal. I don’t see these on any of my machines. They strictly occur once in any of the boots detected by ‘journal --list-boots’:
**3400G:~ #** journalctl -b 0 _KERNEL_SUBSYSTEM=scsi --grep 'Samsung SSD 850 3B6Q PQ'
-- Logs begin at Wed 2021-06-16 05:24:23 CEST, end at Sat 2021-06-19 07:36:14 CEST. --
Jun 19 07:21:11 3400G kernel: **scsi 1:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA ****Samsung SSD 850 3B6Q PQ****: 0 ANSI: 5**
**3400G:~ #**
I presume some resets occur on your machine.

Since installing kernel-default-5.12.9-1.1.x86_64 the usb interface to memory sticks has become sensitive to physical mounting.
Obervations:
sometimes usb-memory-stick not recognised on one port but ok on another
sometimes usb-memory-stick connection lost during save operation leaving the named file empty
no differecne after updating to kernel-default-5.12.10-1.1.x86_64
usb-hdd i/f’s very stable
stopped using kbackup due to file corruption on usb-memory-sticks
occurrance is on both v2 and v3 usb i/f’s
its not h/w related as this occurs on both laptop and pc.
Assumptions
timing problem that only affects usb-memory-sticks
or
the os’s on the network have all been compromised
conclusion
baffled: do not know how to report this as sometimes all works ok

Are you sure? All my sticks work perfectly since ever:

Hi, I ran the diagnosis program installed in the BIOS (it’s a DELL’S laptop) and it says that the test on the hard drive was unsuccesful.
I thank you for your advice and support.
reads like a hardware problem. either a faulty USB-Hub or a faulty USB-stick
Hi everybody,
I get exactly the same warning and it appeared around the same time ; it concerns one of this machine’s SSD, the one on which OpenSuse is running (the other one is for W10). Smartctl does’nt report anything worrying, and (if I understand the meaning of this line correctly) says that my SSD has 93% of its lifetime left.
Meanwhile I bought another SSD but I think the warning is probably due to a bug and, well, I’ll keep it for a future replacement or install it on another machine !
Kernel is 5.12.12-1-default.
