still no internet connection

Hi, I just installed OS 11.1 beta5 while the rtl8187b is
supported there. I see a connection with my router of 40%,
but I can’t get an internet connection. I use static IP addresses and WPA psk. As soon as I type in my dns data the
‘apply’ button grays out. I use the Gnome desktop.
please some hints. Wal

I don’t know anything about Gnome, but we should be able to determine where your
connection goes wrong.

Please post the output of ‘/usr/sbin/iwconfig’.
Please post the output of ‘/sbin/ifconfig’.
Please post the output of ‘/sbin/route -n’.

I lost my internet connection in 11.1 beta5 as soon as I changed my hostname and I can’t get it back. Maybe someone smarter than me can figure out which “module” is doing this. :shame:

OK Larry, if you can help me out wonderful !
But first of all: I can’t find my console anymore,
where is it ?

I don’t use Gnome, but it should be in the applications tab. Can anyone else help?

Larry

OK Larry. Hope you’re till there.
So I downloaded 11.1 RC 1 KDE. And the output I get is:

Everything looks normal so far. At this point, you should be able to scan for
networks using ‘sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan’. If that command shows you your AP,
then you need to configure your connection. There should be a network icon in
the lower-right hand corner of the screen. Click on it and select “New
Connection”. The popup should show eth0 and wlan0. Click on the latter, select
your ESSID and fill in the blanks. One thing - although the “Connect and Save”
button will be active from the start, keep clicking on “Next” as long as it is
active.

Back again,I did all that and I managed to connect 2 times
very shortly. What I see is a very poor connection of 30 percent. Is this due to the distance of 10m or is it a poor driver ? Under vista it works well.

The “Link Quality” calculation is only approximate - I can say that as I wrote
that code for the RTL8187B. As far as I can tell, the driver is pretty good. The
throughput is a little lower than my other two wireless devices, but still
faster than any broadband line. I only see the differences when talking to my
server, which is hard wired to the router.

You will get a bit better performance if you use the compat-wireless drivers
found at http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download. These include some
improvements that won’t be in the mainline until 2.6.29. If you go this route, I
also have a pending patch that you will need. To build these drivers, you will
need the “make”, “gcc”, and “kernel headers” packages.
