Steam Client?

What happened to the Steam client for OpenSUSE… It’s not found on the software.opensuse.org site anymore?!?!

There’s another thread here about this - the license terms are/were
incompatible and it was/is being reviewed.

HI Jim,

So, the only way to install and play this is to use Ubuntu? Is there an alternative way to install it on OpenSUSE?

Perhaps I will search around as you mention this was discussed already.

Thanks for the reply :)!

There are a few threads that still talk about how to install it - have a
search and you should find them.

There is a link on the steam forums to a rpm for open suse.
It did workfor some, but I cant tell if it will work for everybody.

opensuse 12.2 kde problems :: Steam for Linux General Discussions

the other night i was thinking about this subject. then i started thinking that i really wanted to try it and might try out ubuntu…then i thought nah, there’s going to be an official opensuse package soon or at least real repo to add to get a tested rpm so i’m not sweatin it anymore. been with suse since suse version 7.can’tquiteremember so i’ve learned that patience has always payed off with this distro.

You can always try this: https://github.com/xvitaly/steamrpm

I had a problem when I tried it, but I had already installed steam , so it will prob work for you.

And you can copy the commands into the command line.

More on this in this topic:

I’ve been using the perl script alien to create rpms from deb files (you can find it on software.opensuse.org). No problems so far. I just installed the steam beta to try it out and it works fine.

Be aware that alien is useful only insofar as it converts the content -
it doesn’t enable any sort of dependency checking or mapping, so while it
works as a “last resort” for many packages, it’s not really something
that’s intended to be relied on for creating redistributable RPMs.

^^

Remembered too late to add a warning, thanks. Alien is handy as a stopgap for the few programs where tarballs are not provided and rpms are nowhere to be found. I use it to create rpms for my own use and deal with mapping issues if they come up. Steam is working ok for me with this method but ymmv.
