static ip woes

ok, so I updated from 11.2rc2 over the weekend, and things seemed to be OK.

In I go to work, where I have a static ip, and then my trouble starts. I set it up via yast and I get complaints about there being no smpppd. I know little about that package, never used it before, but I am surprised that I still don’t have a - what appears to be - basic networking tool.

So you need to download a package in order to connect to the internet, that old chestnut! A situation common in the old days. Anyhow, I don’t have the 11.2 DVD so I use another machine to download and burn it (large delay introduced).

That done, I go through yast, but in trying to install smpppd with the DVD inserted, it is very insistent upon using the online repositories. So I disable them all except the cd drive. OK, this time, it finds smpppd and its dependencies and installs. I also note that when I select the smpppd package, it does not tick it, nstead I have to click “cancel” and then magically it gets ticked … unusual behaviour.

I set up the network interface again … all appears to go smoothly. I have done this already with 11.2rc2, and it was fine.

However, in my new 11.2 all this just isn’t enough. Te connection refuses to work. ifconfig eth0 (my n/w i/f) reports normal … but it’s still unresponsive.

As you can tell, I’m fairly irked by all this n/w hassle which rc2 did not seem to have. Is the firewall? Have I hit a bug?

I’m stuck. Any advice welcome. In the meanwhile, I’m goignt ot try and find the configuration text files, I’m finding yast a little clunky when a problem of this sort arises.

Cheers

Any advice we

Oh, and there are more woes …

When installing a package from Yast, as it executes the various SuSEconfig subprograms, it stops, hangs or takes way too ong on SuSEconfig.texlive.

Although I was happy with 11.2rc2, I did notice some reluctance/delay on SuSEconfig.texlive … but this time, it’s worse.

However, when I check afterwards, the package does seem to be installed.

I’m getting to thinking that I have a faulty opensuse installation … I’m loading xfce, might this have something to do with it? TO think I was happy with rc2, how ironic.

OK, I decided to concentrate on my wireless i/f. This time, I got it working. So, a little progress at least. It probably means that the firewall is not the reason that I can’t get my wired connection working.
