so, which history book did you use to find that startx command (i ask
because i have a four pound Linux Unleased within an arms reach that
gives that command to launch the GUI…
ok so, linux has been around 20 years now and in that time it has
progressed…and not everything you can read is still current…
first: if you installed openSUSE 12.2 into a VM you shouldn’t even see a
command line, it should boot right to the GUI you selected in the
install (probably KDE or GNOME)…if not, your problem is more basic
than startx does not work!!
well, startx will not work but “init 5” (as root) should <as already
noted by ‘gogalthorp’>.
that should start X and load the DE you installed, and offer you a user
log in screen…but, because you got to a command prompt i doubt you
have a hunky-dory install…did you md5sum check the downloaded image
and then self test the install media made from it before installing?

Normally you have to edit the file “/etc/permissions.local”, which at
the end says you have to do certain change in order to use “startx”.
This is basically the same as doing xorg suid, as others have said.
But this will not work for you, neither init 5, I believe.
People, look at the photo, there is a crash because of an illegal
instruction.
Maybe there is more info in the “/var/log/Xorg.0.log” file.

Is your VM on windows. No need to startx and stuff . Generally you should see ui after boot in VM too.
I believe this thread should go into https://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/virtualization/
If you trying out Linux then it might be abetter option would be to use a Live ISO Instead of VMing .
