Starting network from scratch

Dear all,
I am using opensuse quite some time (right now I am running opensuse 12.1, always upgrading versions and the current kde that is included with that).

In the past I was editing the network settings directly so to connect to my wireless access point. As I has started moving my laptop around I wanted to start using the default guid that comes embedded with kde to connect to others networks. So far I am having quite few problems and most probably this might be because of

a) it finds that my netwoork files like /etc/hosts and does not edit them. t
b) It can not store the configuration files needed so it seems to be losig password for the authentication and thus it usually freezes at authentication state when tries to connect.

So my connection is it possible to start all from scratch and make my network working again? How I can do that?

I would like to thank you in advance

The file /etc/hosts should not be touched by NM. It is used to set the IP
addresses for hosts that cannot be found by DNS. I use it only for the named
hosts on my network that have fixed IPs.

If you use the “Manage Connections” tab, you can setup the connections you want.
The process will want to store the keys in kwallet. You should do so. If you do
not select “system connection”, then the root password will not be needed.

Use the applet.

Depending on what and how you previously made your network settings, those could conflict with NM.

Need details on what apps you used to connect manually and <maybe> which files you may have manually edited.

Also, could be relevant what type of security the networks are using (Typically I assume WPA “Personal” PSK using AES and less often TKIP, but are you’re connecting to other types?).
