ssh to server results in pausing on client

I setup an ssh server that works fine when using the terminal, but trying to run programs like firefox fails. It will open partially and then simply hang.

Less complicated programs can open successfully and run fine, but cause my remote computer to pause every 5 seconds for about a second.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem(s)?

What kind of connection are you using between the two machines.

On a LAN:
wired to wired connection I get ok results (a little lag in apps like firefox, but mostly I use it for yast and the lag is barely noticeable)
wired to wireless I get about the same as above, perhaps a little more lag, but not too bad.
wireless to wireless is pretty bad with a lot of lag
I wouldn’t even attempt to do X over ssh outside of a LAN.

It is over a very long distance but that doesn’t explain why my remote computer is pausing every few seconds.

Remote computer = client

I don’t know, unless you are benefiting up front from some sort of speed bust (or what ever they call it) where your ISP is giving priority to the first few megs of a transfer. Then being throttled after that period has elapsed (so they can give the bandwidth to someone else).

I am almost positive that my isp does have speed boost, or whatever they like to call it. A very annoying feature. I guess the only solution would be to limit my uplink over my ssh port, but i’m not sure how to do that. I actually tried setting up QoS in my router but the **** thing is buggy to no end.

Have You set up the server to forward X11 ? Do You have X installed on the client machine ? What does it mean to open partially does it throw any errors ?

Best regards,
Greg

It connects fine. X11 forwarding works fine. The problem is that it is pausing my client computer every few seconds.

Did You check the logs ? Are You sure internet connection is not to blame ?

Best regards,
Greg

I would try nomachine if I was connecting to a server across the internet. Forwarding the x server, it’s all uncompressed. Nomachine compresses and encrypts it all and makes it a much better experience. If you still have issues that way, then you can investigate further.

There’s a free version.
