Spring 2015

Yeeessss!!!
It has been unusually warm here latest week. It is now(in my hometown) what the Swedish meteorologist define as the beginning of spring, -the first occasion on which the average temperature exceeds zero (0C) degrees for seven consecutive days.

It is ~3 weeks yearly here. It depends of course when the spring arrives of latitude and elevation in Sweden which is located in South to North (~2000km) direction.

Anyway I’m not complaining. The 4x4 (dogs) does. Almost all the snow in sunny locations are gone.

As we say around these parts:

  • Spring has sprung

February (around Chicago) was unusually cold. But finally we are beginning to see reasonable temperatures.

It suddenly got warmer in northern England on Saturday after weeks of temperatures only a few degrees above zero. But our weather is too unpredictable to be sure that spring has sprung.

Or, from the Bronx:

De spring is sprung, de grass is riz
I wonder where de boidies is?
De boid is on de wing, but dat’s absoid,
De wing is on de boid

De grass is riz de trees is green
And in de moitle tree a boid is seen.
A boid is seen and also hoid
And also felt. He dropped a toid.
Dis gets woise

And so de boid what did doit
Has got to die and dat’s a coit
I gets me gat intent on moider
Detoimined dis won’t get no foider
Oh boy! Oh boy! Am I pertoibed

I lifts me gat de boidie choips
I gotta give de squoit de woiks
But in the moitle tree above
There sits a little toitle dove
Remember moitle?

I’ve got me shooter primed but now
2 boids are sitting on de bough
And so, I cannot shoot de dove
Because de spring’s de time for love

Various versions of this poem, one with the second verse:

As I looked up in the sky
The bird dropped whitewash in my eye
I didn’t laugh, I didn’t cry
I just thanked God that cows don’t fly.

Ha!

This week feels like spring, but we’ll see how long it lasts. I won’t be surprised if 'ol man Winter decides to do one last “slap” before he closes the door until next winter!

On a happy note, my gutters are finally flowing down the spout rather than just outside the back door!

Ahhh… Yes it has been warm here when the sun is up. Clear whether and darkness means ~minus -4 to -8C in the mornings. Midle of the day +6C.

At 60 latitude (i e New foundland, Labrador, Alaska) how much longer the day gets every day. Noticeable. You have to live here to… Sprung and filled with energy!

We still have snow in shadowed areas here.

O-ho. “King Bore” (is he called Jack Frost in English?) came for a visit this weekend. -5C in the morning and 40-50mm of new snow. I’m not that surprised, -it comes drawbacks like this even in May here.

Here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania USA we had a really nice 60f day in Febuary. After that it was record setting cold days. I am looking forward for it to warm up but not yet. I think the cold season really takes a lot out of my health.

Yesterday it was +7C and sun. Today… +0.5C and snowing. Story of my life :).

jonte1, just one question.

What are realestate prices where your from (average price per square meter for an apartment, house?). And how does it compare to the rest of the country, is it much cheaper, more expensive…?

Thanks.

Interesting question. I haven’t thought of it my self. But some numbers by average /m2 (1 m2=10.72 Square foot) from my home town:
-apartments ~1951 Eur (~2093USD)
-houses ~1983 Eur (~2127USD)

Main Capital area(Stockholm)
-apartments ~5080 Eur (5450USD)
-houses ~3803 Eur (~4080USD)

Whole country:
-apartments ~3385 Eur (~3683USD)
-houses ~2120 Eur (~2274USD)

I see a trend(and areas I haven’t wrote about above). People are lazy. It depends on where in the country you are and what you prefer (apartment/house), there are big differences at the same location (even here where i live). The location means all as any real estate agent could tell :).

Considering you live in the Scandinavian area, if I’m not mistaken, the prices seem quite affordable. Where I live, the salaries are many folds lower, but a square meter of an apartment can cost 2500 € easily.

Thanks for the info jonte!

Yes. But you are missing something. It is really dark here where I live during winter and its last long after other areas have spring/summer. There is a reason that Scandinavia getting less inhabitable for people the further to the north you get. November/December to April/may is winter here.

Glad to be at service :).

Ps. I went up on the roof to change one LNB(Satelite microwave head) at 20.13 this evening. Daylight yes;) Ds.

I has its benefits.

It haven’t been snowing sins April 2 here. So why not some BBQ today?

How to start the grill(char-coal one). By the way why all this nice grills using propane? Lack of the charcoal-taste. Hmm… To use petrol-accelerate to even start it. When We (who has not closed down nuclear power plants yet) and have a lot of electricity to use and wood to burn :).

The photo is from last summer, the rest of the pack was busy in the garden during today. +7C and the sun was shining parts of the day.

Signs of spring, the first poison snake has been photographed on Friday here in town. The large lake “Runn” ((63km2)nr44 on the list of lakes larger then 100x100m in Sweden) here have “sköljt”. No translation, “sköljt” means that you can take a boat from one end to the another without to be stopped/trouble by ice all the way.

At my yard? “rådjur” (roe deer, roedeer, deer ?) seems to find the first green there. No dogs near that side of the house. Still snow and ice in the shadow in some places.

No this is not April 1.

I was receiving a e-mail about the south of Sweden today. Small deers here and north (dogs are here).

Very much larger deers (moose, elk) are there. LOL. Would you like to have this outside your house, mother and 3 youngsters?

It is cold here, winter is back. Only 17 centigrades. Brrr!

About week ago, we had 30 centigrades.

Every time we go to New Hampshire or Maine or Vermont, my wife wants to see a moose (again).

I think the cats would freak out and the horse would by like “c’mon over! Here’s a couple of good spots!..”

LOL.

Problem is, my house has no heating, thus the temperature inside is also
17. Thick walls (thus high thermal inertia), no insulation, high
humidity, draughty. I get inside about the same outside temperature,
averaged and delayed two or more days.
