Hey, I’m on openSuse 12.3. Is there a way to spin down an external HD when it’s not being used?
Do you mean a USB connected disk?

If it works, it is done with “hdparm”. The manual explains the available
options, one of them is the spin down time out, and another one does an
immediate spin down.

Yes thankyou, hdparm was the key.
And it was for USB external harddrive.
Where is the best place to put this hdparm command so it will execute on boot?
Nevermind, I put it in /etc/init.d/after.local. Hope that was correct. Seems to be working.
