Speeding up OpenOffice

I read this tip today and was amazed at how much it speeds up the launching of OpenOffice and it’s suite of apps. Check it out here:

fewt@blog:~$ _: Speed up Open Office!

Well I tried these settings and it does indeed speed up the loading of OpenOffice. I even was able to use the same settings in the version you load into Windows, and it was faster in loading there as well. I don’t know if there is any sort of downside to using these settings. But so far, I have not found any.

Thank You,

It is faster because it is loaded in advance (Quickstarter). The
downside is that it uses memory and resources even if you don’t use
it; if you are login-in and want to load some other app fast, you will
be slowed down by OOo preloading at the same time.

It is an advantage and a disadvantage… just choose which is better
for you

Like all things there is a downside Carlos E. R., but the memory usage would only be a problem if you don’t have much of it I guess. Thanks for your comments. I see that you are using a guest account, so welcome to the openSUSE forums. You should consider starting a regular account which provides a few extra options here.

Thank You,

I didn’t choose the Quickstarter option for openSUSE and I still got the faster startup.

And on my Mac, there was no Quickstarter option and there is nothing related to OpenOffice running in the background, according to the Activity Monitor.

Of course.

No, it is not that. I access via NNTP

If you want even faster office suite use KOffice. I started using it a few months ago and found that it is quite nice. The 2.2 version is even better and the only downside is that it can’t save documents to .doc but i can live with that.

It was able to that last time i was using it, though that format has
changed in the meantime.
